SARATOGA SPRINGS ? As the racing meet heats up for the biggest weekend of the summer, attendance is up and on-track wagering is higher than it was last year at Saratoga Race Course.
While everything appears to be going well locally, a study issued earlier this month reports that unless changes are made nationally, the sport of horse racing could be severely hampered by decade?s end. The decline could threaten the $200 million annual economic boost racing in Saratoga provides to a nine-county region that stretches from Warren to Columbia counties. ?Saratoga is a very interesting region. You go to the track and look around and you wouldn?t think that there?s anything wrong with the sport at all,? said Bob Curran, a spokesman for the Jockey Club, the breed registry for thoroughbred horses in North America.
