Debt advice for anyone concerned about unemployment

The Debt Advisory Centre is reminding everyone to do what they can to protect themselves against financial hardship in the event that they're made redundant, after it was revealed by the Office for National Statistics that unemployment has hit a 20-year high and that there are currently over 1 million young people unemployed.

Some of those people may be able to rely on savings, but some may find they need to borrow money to get by. If you're in work at the moment - are you prepared for what might happen if you lost your job?

Growth forecasts predict that the economy will only grow by about 1% over 2012. Also, it's predicted by some experts that unemployment will rise further this year and the next. Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, has said that growth over the next few quarters would be "markedly weaker" than previously thought.

Unemployment can easily lead to debt. The debt charity the Money Advice Service has said that one in eight of the people who became unemployed in the third quarter of this year will have severe debt problems as a result.

A spokesperson for the Debt Advisory Centre commented: "If you are employed at the moment, consider whether you are doing enough to protect yourself financially if you lost your job. It is certainly worth putting whatever you can afford into savings every month. Even ?50 a month (just ?12.50 per week) would grow into a substantial pot of ?600 after only 12 months.

"If you're worried about your job security but can't afford to save at the moment because of debt payments, it's particularly important to get those debts paid off. If you can't even afford those debt payments, you may be able to lower your monthly payments with one of the many debt solutions that are available to people in debt. A professional debt advisor will be able to tell you about the various ways out of debt.

"If you are unemployed, do what you can to avoid borrowing. If you have savings to fall back on, so much the better; even so, you may find it impossible to maintain the same standard of living as when you were working. Addressing your spending and living within your means will help you to cope with unemployment and avoid unnecessary borrowing while you're out of work.

"Finally, make sure you are receiving all the benefits and tax credits you are entitled to while you're not working, although this isn't likely to be a great amount. While you're out of work, draw up a new budget taking account of your present income and try to make sure your expenses remain less than your income. Things may be difficult for a while, but unemployment is usually temporary, so focus on your goal of finding a new job, or retraining."

Ford sales soar: Automaker tops 2 million units in 2011

For the first time since 2007, Ford Motor Co. reported Ford brand sales this year have officially topped 2 million vehicles.

Erich Merkle, Ford?s sales analysis manager, said Friday Ford is the first automotive brand to hit the 2-milllion-unit sales mark in the U.S. since 2007. Reaching the milestone secures Ford?s status as the best selling brand in the United States.

?Ford?s lineup of high-quality, fuel-efficient cars, utilities and trucks continues to attract more and more new customers,? Merkle said.

?With gasoline prices tracking higher than last year, customers continue to move toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, whether they are passenger cars or utilities,? he added.

Both the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus achieve 40 mpg highway, while the Ford Explorer brings a class-leading 28 mpg highway with its new EcoBoost engine, he said.

Ford?s smallest utility, the fuel-efficient Escape, has achieved record sales volumes this year and is

America?s best-selling utility vehicle, Merkle added.

Overall, Ford brand small cars are on pace to post an increase of more than 20 percent this year. Ford brand utilities are tracking to post more than a 30 percent gain.

Earlier this week, TrueCar.com, which tracks sales data across the United States, estimated Ford Motor Co.?s overall sales increased 6.8 percent this month.

For December 2011, new light vehicle sales expected to increase 8.1 percent to 1.23 million units. Continued...

Meanwhile, incentive spending has dropped in December. The industry average incentive spending per unit will be approximately $2,563 in December 2011, which represents a decrease of 2.6 percent from November 2011 and down

3 percent from December 2010, TrueCar reported.

Used car sales are estimated to be 2.9 million units, up 1.7 percent from December 2010, and up 10.4 percent from November 2011.

?December?s sales rate was a continuation of the rather slow and steady recovery that now symbolizes 2011,? said Jesse Toprak, vice president of Industry Trends and Insights for TrueCar.com.

?This year was absent of a blockbuster sales month, but we see this pace of growth as healthy and sustainable in the coming year, where the industry is going to sell nearly 14 million units based on the merits of its products and improved economy,? he said.

Republicans battle over undecided voters in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? With time running short, Republican presidential candidates Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich battled Thursday to win over a pivotal crop of undecided conservative voters. Of all the candidates, only Mitt Romney seemed to largely escape attack as he worked to win a state that long seemed out of reach until this week.

"Don't settle for what's not good enough to save the country," the newly ascendant Santorum implored Iowans at city hall in Coralville, urging voters to put conservative principles above everything else and suggesting that his rivals, and specifically Ron Paul, lacked them.

For the first time, though, the former Pennsylvania senator became a target.

"When he talks about fiscal conservatism, every now and then it leaves me scratching my head because he was a prolific earmarker," Perry, the Texas governor, said of Santorum as the day began, referring to special spending projects members of Congress seek. "He loaded up his bill with Pennsylvania pork.'"

Santorum defended the practice as part of lawmakers' constitutional role as appropriators, telling CNBC that he owed it to Pennsylvanians to bring money to the state. He said earmarking became abused and that he would support a ban on them if he were president.

Perry also slapped at Santorum in a radio ad and in a new TV commercial that lumps him in with Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Paul and says: "The fox guarding the henhouse is like asking a congressman to fix Washington: bad idea."

The maneuvering underscored the fluid ? if not convoluted ? state of the GOP presidential race as Tuesday's caucuses loom while cultural conservatives and evangelical Republicans, who make up the base of the electorate here, continue to be divided. That lack of unity paves the way for someone who is seen as less consistently conservative.

Five days out, public and private polling show Romney and Paul in strong contention to win the caucuses, with coalitions of support cobbled together from across the Republican political spectrum and their get-out-the-vote operations ? beefed up from their failed 2008 bids ? at the ready. They're the only two with the money and the organizations necessary to ensure big turnouts on Tuesday.

Three others ? Santorum, Perry and Gingrich ? will have to rely largely on momentum to carry supporters to precinct caucuses. Each was working to convince fickle conservatives that he alone would satisfy those who yearn for a nominee who would adhere strictly to GOP orthodoxy.

Bachmann, meanwhile, worked to convince backers that her cash-strapped campaign was not in disarray after a top supporter in Iowa abandoned her to back Paul.

After state Sen. Kent Sorenson bolted as her Iowa campaign chairman, Bachmann continued to bleed staff, losing her Iowa political director, Wes Enos, on Thursday. Some evangelical pastors have said they've urged her to quit the race.

Bachmann condemned Sorenson for quitting, and defiantly vowed to continue in the race.

"Iowans aren't told who to vote for. Iowans are independent and they're going to make their decisions," Bachmann said in Des Moines, on the last day of a 10-day tour of Iowa's 99 counties.

Ads, mostly negative, flooded television and radio. They filled mailboxes, too.

No less than five new TV ads were rolled out Thursday, with Romney, for one, releasing a 60-second, optimistic commercial promoting his vision for America and illustrating his confidence with his standing in the primary race. He was staying far from the fray and looking toward the general election.

"In the campaign to come, the American ideals of economic freedom and opportunity need a clear and unapologetic defense. And I intend to make it because I have lived it," Romney says in the commercial that includes patriotic images and scenes from his June campaign announcement in New Hampshire.

He's in the midst of a four-day trek that he hopes will seal victory here and give him momentum heading into the Jan. 10 New Hampshire primary, the closest thing to a must-win state for the former Massachusetts governor.

On the second day of his bus tour, Romney turned out big crowds at stops in northern and eastern Iowa, focusing on more populous areas and counties he won four years ago.

"We have a choice in this coming election of what kind of America we're going to have," Romney said at J's Home Cooking in Cedar Falls, before meeting a crowd of 500 in Mason City. "It's not just about replacing a president. It's about saving the soul of America."

He didn't acknowledge his rivals but an outside group aligned with him rolled out a new ad against Gingrich that asks, "Haven't we had enough mistakes?" and notes the former House speaker's past admissions of judgment lapses.

As Romney sailed above it all, the fight raged among his rivals elsewhere in the state, where all six candidates competing in the caucuses are spending almost all their time for the next five days.

Looking to capitalize on his burst of support in new polls, Santorum made a play for tea party backers lining up behind Paul by arguing that the Texas congressman is longer on promising sweeping change than enacting it. "The guy has passed one bill in 20 years. What makes you think he can do any of these things?" Santorum said.

He added: "We need someone who has the bold, sharp contrast not just to win the election but govern the country, not somebody who is just a little better."

And, Bachmann castigated Paul's opposition to military intervention in Iran as "dangerous." She also suggested that his opposition to the federal war on drugs amounted to supporting the legalization of cocaine and heroin.

Perry focused his criticism on all the others on the right, saying: "There are other conservatives in this contest. I readily agree. But their records don't always square with the rhetoric." And, as he argued that he was the only true outsider in the race, Perry noted that four of his rivals ? Gingrich, Paul, Santorum and Bachmann ? have a combined 63 years of experience in Washington.

"I am asking you to vote your conservative values," Perry implored.

The closest anyone got to criticizing Romney directly was when Perry was asked in Cedar Rapids about family dynasties and cited, among other families, the Romneys.

In response, Perry mentioned his own modest upbringing and said: "I'm glad you gave me the opportunity to reflect my differences with Mitt."

The worst Romney faced from his rivals were veiled shots.

Santorum said Republicans must draw a clear contrast with Obama, rather than nominate a Republican with moderate tendencies out of political expedience.

"We need someone who has the bold, sharp contrasts, not just to win the election but to govern the country. Not just someone who is a little bit better," Santorum told supporters.

Perry was asked about family dynasties and the questioner cited, among other families, the Romneys. Perry stopped short of criticizing Romney's privileged upbringing. He mentioned his own humble beginning in small-town Texas before adding: "I'm glad you gave me the opportunity to reflect my differences with Mitt."

Gingrich, for his part, spent the day trying to wrap himself in President Ronald Reagan's cloak, announcing the backing of the late president's son, Michael, and, a day earlier, support from Reagan economic adviser Arthur Laffer.

Even as the polls show him sliding, Gingrich projected an upbeat image.

"The strategy of focusing on jobs and economic growth, staying positive and being pretty relentless in answering questions at every meeting is working," he insisted.

Threat calls to Pak scribe for questioning military role

ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistani journalist Najam Sethi has announced on his television talk show that he has been receiving threatening messages after raising questions about the military's role in politics.

Sethi said he had received "serious" threats from both "non-state and state actors".

He said if the threats did not stop, he would be "compelled" to name the "organizations and officials" who were responsible for them.

Without naming any intelligence agency, Sethi said during his show on Geo News channel on Wednesday night that the organization's operatives were "in touch with and threatening several other senior journalists".

The journalists did not speak about the threats before "because we did not want to destabilize things, but the time has come when all of them should come forward and speak publicly" , he said.

""This is not the age when intelligence operatives should be threatening their own civilians . A state within the state is not acceptable." Sethi's revelations came a week after journalist Hamid Mir claimed he had received threatening messages from the "security establishment".

Amazon Wins, Netflix Loses in Holiday Satisfaction Study [VIDEO] (Mashable)

[brightcove video="1350778361001" /]
Internet shoppers were happy with Amazon and disappointed in Netflix this holiday season, according to a study released Wednesday.

[More from Mashable: Man Uses Google+ Game to Propose to Girlfriend [VIDEO]]

In an annual index of ecommerce sites' customer satisfaction by analytics firm ForeSee, Amazon's performance improved while Netflix's plunged after the two companies spent several years dueling for the study's top spot. Amazon's overall score rose two points to register 88 out of 100 possible points for the index's best mark.

But Netflix, following a year marred by a series of service and public relations missteps, saw its total fall seven points for an overall rank of 79. The 8% decline in score was the steepest of all the companies included in the study.

[More from Mashable: Amazon Goes Social Shopping: What Quorus Hires Mean]

The survey considers a range of factors to rank online retailers, including website content, functionality, merchandise and prices. ForeSee considers a score of 80 to be "the standard for excellence."

Netflix appears to be experiencing continued blowback from a fiasco-plagued 2011. In July, the company unexpectedly raised its prices for both streaming and DVD delivery by 60%. Then in August, it attempted to create a spinoff company that would have required customers to create two separate accounts for what was previously one service.

Netflix then scrapped that plan in October, but its stock price had already lost half its value the month before. ForeSee says its holiday satisfaction survey is the first methodical assessment of customer satisfaction with Netflix since company's blunders earlier this year.

"Customer satisfaction is predictive, which means that Netflix's financial woes may be just beginning," ForeSee president Larry Freed said in a statement accompanying the study's release.

Amazon, meanwhile, continues its dominance of the online retail space in multiple sectors and rebranded its streaming video service earlier this year to better compete with Netflix. Amazon has also received a boost from its line of popular Kindle products, which have sold at an astounding rate recently.

While Amazon enjoyed a glowing review according to the holiday shopping study, other companies made even more impressive jumps in online customer satisfaction. Electronics retailer TigerDirect.com made the largest jump, with an 8 percent increase in customer satisfaction for an overall score of 79. JC Penney, which named former Apple executive Ron Johnson as CEO earlier this year, improved by 6% for an overall score of 83.

Gap.com and Overstock.com posted the steepest declines after Netflix, falling six and five percent, respectively. Gap.com registered an overall score of 73, while Overstock.coms' score was 72.

General online shopper satisfaction has increased from 74 when the holiday satisfaction study began in 2005 to an all-time high of 79 this year.

Where do Netflix and Amazon stand in your opinion? What e-retailers were you impressed or let down by this holiday season?

Venezuela's Chavez: Did U.S. give Latin American leaders cancer? (Reuters)

CARACAS (Reuters) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez speculated on Wednesday that the United States might have developed a way to give Latin American leaders cancer, after Argentina's Cristina Fernandez joined the list of presidents diagnosed with the disease.

It was a typically controversial statement by Venezuela's socialist leader, who underwent surgery in June to remove a tumor from his pelvis. But he stressed that he was not making any accusations, just thinking aloud.

"It would not be strange if they had developed the technology to induce cancer and nobody knew about it until now ... I don't know. I'm just reflecting," he said in a televised speech to troops at a military base.

"But this is very, very, very strange ... it's a bit difficult to explain this, to reason it, including using the law of probabilities."

Chavez, Fernandez, Paraguay's Fernando Lugo, Brazil's Dilma Rousseff and former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have all been diagnosed recently with cancer. All of them are leftists.

Doctors say Fernandez has a very good chance of recovery and will not need chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Her diagnosis was made public on Tuesday.

Chavez said other regional leaders should beware, including his close ally, Bolivian President Evo Morales.

"We'll have to take good care of Evo. Take care Evo!" he said.

The 57-year-old is Latin America's loudest critic of U.S. foreign policy along with Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro, and he frequently lashes out at what he calls the "Yankee Empire".

CASTRO'S WARNING

"Fidel always told me, 'Chavez take care. These people have developed technology. You are very careless. Take care what you eat, what they give you to eat ... a little needle and they inject you with I don't know what,'" he said.

In his comments on Wednesday, Chavez also slammed Washington and its European allies for criticizing Russia's recent parliamentary elections - and said they were planning the same thing for Venezuela's presidential election in October, when he will seek re-election.

"They are crying fraud and saying the elections need to be re-run ... They're trying to destabilize no less than Russia, a nuclear power. That's the madness of the Empire," Chavez said.

"I say this because here in Venezuela, the Imperial Yankee, the local bourgeoisie, and a good part of what they call the opposition parties here, are preparing a similar plan," he said.

"I call on the armed forces to be alert, on the Venezuelan people to be alert. Because we are not going to let the Imperial Yankee destabilize Venezuela again like they did in the past."

Details about Chavez's health remain a closely guarded secret, although he now appears to be recovering and is making longer and longer televised appearances.

Earlier this month he made his first official foreign trip after his surgery, to a regional summit in Uruguay.

Since his return he has often appeared sporting something of a younger, new look: a dark sports coat over an open-necked maroon shirt, and is hair is growing back after chemotherapy.

It is far cry from the green fatigues and red beret that he became famous for wearing for much of his 13 years in power.

Bullied girl's suicide in Mass. has ongoing impact

TODAY's Ann Curry talks with Sharon Chanon Valazquez, one of the teens charged with criminal harassment of Phoebe Prince, who committed suicide on Jan. 14, 2010.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com.

Parents pursuing justice for the suicide death of their 15-year-old daughter in Massachusetts settled with the school district for $225,000, newly released court documents say. The documents were unsealed after a Slate reporter pursued the matter in court.

The report marks an end to legal proceedings in the case of Phoebe Prince, who hanged?herself after months of persistent bullying by other students. Prince's case captured headlines not only in the United States but dominated front pages in Ireland, which was her home until Fall 2009. Like other high profile bullying cases across the country, Phoebe?s death has an ongoing impact on school policies and anti-bully laws.

These cases ?have done an enormous amount to sensitize and activate the public about the issue of bullying? more than research and anything else that has got people thinking about the issue,? said Amanda Nickerson, director of the Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention at the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education. ?I think they have accelerated policy and action and the school and community level.?

Prince enrolled at South Hadley High School as a freshman in Fall 2009, after moving to the United States from Ireland, but quickly fell afoul of a set of girls who apparently were angry about the newcomer dating two male students. Other students, including one of the guys she dated, joined in the harassment.

Over the course of three months, Prince was verbally abused ? publicly and in Facebook posts. She was threatened with physical abuse and received hostile text messages. On the last day of her life, Jan. 14, 2010, some of her tormentors drove by in a car, called her an Irish slut, and suggested that she go kill herself. She did.

Phoebe Prince, 15, committed suicide on Jan. 14, 2010 after a period of persistent bullying at her school in Hadley, Mass.

Five students were charged with an array of felony and misdemeanor violations in connection with Prince?s suffering. They ultimately pleaded guilty to criminal harassment and were sentenced to probation and community service after their court appearances.

Prince?s parents, Anne O?Brien and Jeremy Prince, also filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination in November 2010, alleging that the South Hadley Public Schools had failed to protect Prince against discrimination, the Boston Globe reported.

They withdrew the complaint after settling with the school district in Nov. 2010. A court case filed by a reporter for Slate magazine -- with backing from the ACLU -- won the right to open the court documents this week, revealing a settlement amount of $225,000 from the town of Hadley.

Holding the teens accountable in court and the city's payout may act as as deterrents for other bullies, and adults who fail to intervene. But one lawmaker on the state's education committee believes that these measures are far from adequate and wrote one of the most comprehensive anti-bullying bills in the country.

Martha Walz (D-Boston) says the legislation was under way prior to Prince?s death. But the high school student?s death -- and that of 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, who killed himself in April after being persistently called ?gay? ? gave it momentum. The bill ?Dignity for Every Student? passed by a unanimous vote in May 2010.

?The two suicides allowed me to say? we have to go significantly farther than what others are doing,? said Walz.

The Massachusetts law makes anti-bullying curriculum mandatory for every student in every grade, K-12, in both public and private schools. It also requires training for every adult in the school ? including teachers, coaches, bus drivers, custodians and administrators ? on how to recognize bullying and what to do about it. It?makes it mandatory for every adult to report cases of bullying, and every report mandatory for schools to investigate.

Similar cases have prompted many state?s to draft laws ? some named specific victims ? but Nickerson says that many lean to punishment, and fail to prevent the problem, and present new ones.

?Sometimes these laws are in reaction to a tragedy. People want to do something,? she said. ?So often it leads to criminalizing and finding someone who is at fault. That?s our normal reaction ? who is to blame, who is to be responsible??

?I?m very cautious about this because we are dealing with minors, after all. And bullying is pretty prevalent ? about 30 percent are involved as a bully or as a target? Prevention and education is the answer in most cases.?

Although Massachusetts was late among the states to enact an anti-bullying law ? 46 other states have some form of anti-bullying legislation ? Walz said the timing allowed her to improve upon existing laws, many of which are largely punitive, not preventative.

?They were all about identifying what bullying is and punishing kids who are engaging in it... and they were failing.... You need to create a cultural change, so that bullying is antithetical to a school?s culture ? so it is not tolerated by teachers, and it is also not tolerated by students,? she said. ?The real key is empowering the bystanders.?

Walz said that under the new Massachusetts law reports of bullying in schools have spiked, as anticipated. But she predicted that as the definition of bullying becomes clearer to students and teachers and as prevention efforts take hold, that number should level off and decline.

?The law is intended to get at not just students who commit suicide as those who suffer day in and day out? and are deeply harmed.?

NASA conducts Orion parachute testing for orbital test flight

ScienceDaily (Dec. 28, 2011) ? NASA successfully conducted a drop test of the Orion crew vehicle's parachutes high above the Arizona desert Tuesday, Dec. 20, in preparation for its orbital flight test in 2014. Orion will carry astronauts deeper into space than ever before, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and ensure a safe re-entry and landing.

A C-130 plane dropped the Orion test article from an altitude of 25,000 feet above the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Grounds. Orion's drogue chutes were deployed between 15,000 and 20,000 feet, followed by the pilot parachutes, which then deployed two main landing parachutes. This particular drop test examined how Orion would land under two possible failure scenarios.

Orion's parachutes are designed to open in stages, which is called reefing, to manage the stresses on the parachutes after they are deployed. The reefing stages allow the parachutes to sequentially open, first at 54 percent of the parachutes' full diameter, and then at 73 percent. This test examined how the parachutes would perform if the second part of the sequence was skipped.

The second scenario was a failure to deploy one of Orion's three main parachutes, requiring the spacecraft to land with only two. Orion landed on the desert floor at a speed of almost 33 feet per second, which is the maximum designed touchdown speed of the spacecraft.

Since 2007, the Orion program has conducted a vigorous parachute air and ground test program and provided the chutes for NASA's successful pad abort test in 2010. Lessons learned from this experience have improved Orion's parachute system.

North Oregon Coast vs. Rest of the Galaxy ??

    ?????Wednesday 28th December, 2011??Source: Beach Connection ??
(Manzanita, Oregon) – It's a lovely day, like any day in January on the Oregon coast.
Oh wait a minute. It's a spring-like day, in January. An extraordinarily spring-like day, where temperatures actually get balmy on the beaches of Manzanita.
The Pacific ocean is calm and serene, with just the right amount of power to create some fun and fasc...

PBT: Relentless Heat too much for Celtics

PBT: In dispatching the Celtics on Tuesday, Miami looked like a relentless machine. The Heat were two games away from a title and they look better than they did last season. Much better. Which is scary for the other 29 teams.

Windows 7 virus hid all of my files and programs

Something downloaded to my computer the other day (it got through Norton) which contained a virus or somthing similar. The virus came up saying that the hard drive couldn't be read. Not knowing 100% if it was a virus, I took it to Fry's, since I have a warranty, but he took one look at it and said that is was for sure a virus, nothing physical. When I got home, I booted it in Safe Mode and downloaded and ran Malware Bytes and it took off quite a few things, I then ran Norton and it found another 69 things it took off. After I did this, I restarted it the normal way and when I go look in my folders, there are no programs or files at all. Also, all of my favorites are gone in IE

I know they're still on my computer somewhere, because I have a few things set to run on startup, and they still run. I also just figured out that I can search for a program and find the .exe file, but when I go to the folder it says it's in, I'm not able to see it.

I'm not sure what to do, I could contact Norton and get them to help, since it made it through their program, but I'd really like to be able to use my computer normally again, and I don't really have time to sit on the phone for three hours while they walk me through it.

    Any help would be great!!!!!

    Thanks,
    Rachel pullhair.gif

I ran DDS and the file is as follows:
