Daily Chronicle | DeKalb gives first approval to property tax levy

DeKALB ? The DeKalb City Council gave initial approval Monday for setting its property tax levy request at $9.67 million, meaning that a property owner would pay 79 cents for each $100 for their property?s equalized assessed value.

Residents paid 72 cents per $100 on their 2011 bills, which were paid in 2012.

Only Fifth Ward Alderman Ronald Naylor disagreed with raising property taxes above the amount the council set last year. Sixth Ward Alderman Dave Baker was not present at the meeting.

?I?d like the levy to stay where it was, so we can truly say we?re not raising taxes,? Naylor said.

Monday night?s vote was not the final action. The council will vote on the issue again at its Dec. 10 meeting. The council is required by law to file its ordinance with the city clerk by the last Tuesday in December.

The aldermen had previously set the ceiling for a property tax levy at $9.67 million, and were given two options by city staff to set the request at either $9.67 million or $9.63 million ? the amount the city levied last year.

Although the 2012 levy is $40,000 higher, the increase is needed to capture revenue from new construction in the city, Second Ward Alderman Tom Teresinski said.

?That new construction is being incentivized by us and we never capture it,? Teresinski said, referring to past council decision to keep the rate flat.

Laura Pisarcik, the city?s finance director, said by capturing revenue from new construction, most of which is commercial, the council is not putting a lot of the burden on homeowners. On average, property values in the city have fallen 8 percent, but residential property values have fallen 11 percent, Pisarcik said.

The city uses property tax revenue to fund pensions of city staff, police officers and firefighters. The $9.67 million request would be able to fund all the police and fire pensions, and 45 percent of the pensions of city staff. The other 55 percent will have to be made up from one of the city?s other funds, she said.

Jim Kayes, president of the DeKalb Police Pension Board, served as a warning siren for incoming higher pensions costs during Monday?s public hearing. However, the city can soften the blow by paying more in the present than in the future.

?If you don?t pay for it in the front end, you?re going to pay for it in the back end,? Kayes said. ?I want to encourage you to continue the direction you?re going in because it is an improvement.?

Great Advice For Anyone Looking To File For Bankruptcy | Siben ...

TIP! Don?t file for bankruptcy the income that you get is bigger than your bills. Understand that while declaring bankruptcy will eliminate many of your debts, you will have difficulty obtaining credit and will pay more in interest for the credit you do receive for at least seven years.

There are few financial decisions more momentous than determining whether or not it is time for a bankruptcy filing. Therefore, it is very important to understand what you are doing when you file for bankruptcy. Apply the advice within this article to have guidance in the proper direction. Whatever tough decisions you must come to face with, research can help you find your way!

TIP! If you are a position where you are considering bankruptcy, take a moment to reflect on how your financial situation got this bad. It is one thing if it is unplanned medical bills, but if it is impulsive shopping, that is another.

Your filing should include all debts and creditors you need to eliminate. Any debts you forget to list will not be discharged. It?s your responsibility to ensure everything is written down to avoid getting charged for debts that can be discharged.

TIP! Consider all of your options before filing for bankruptcy. One good option might be credit counseling.

Don?t file for bankruptcy until your represented by an attorney. Personal bankruptcy is quite complex, and it is entirely possible that you will not be able to familiarize yourself with all the laws and processes. A qualified bankruptcy attorney can guide you through the filing process.

TIP! Don?t try to hide anything if you are filing for bankruptcy, as this will hurt you in the long run. Your bankruptcy lawyer has to know every detail of your finances, whether bad or good.

Before declaring bankruptcy, it is important to know your rights. Bill collectors will lie to you and say you can?t have their bill discharged. What you can?t file on is very small, like student loans or child support payments. If your creditors are telling you any other kind of debts cannot be cancelled, get a written proof and send it to the general office of your state?s attorney to report this illegal behavior.

TIP! If you plan to pay debts off before you file for bankruptcy, be careful. When you?re planning on filing bankruptcy, your finances have to be in a state of limbo, for lack of a better term.

Don?t take large cash advances from credit cards prior to filing since the debts will be eliminated from these cards. This is fraud, and you will be required to pay that money back.

TIP! If you?re planning on filing for bankruptcy soon, stop using your credit cards. It can be tempting to go on a buying spree, but the courts will frown on it.

When deciding to file bankruptcy, do not feel ashamed of your situation. Although the process can be stressful, you must be decisive, accurate and candid about your decision. If you think rationally, then you know that you are trying to do what?s best for you and there is no shame in that.

TIP! Filing bankruptcy under Chapter 13 means you can still get a loan for a car or a mortgage. However, it can be more difficult.

It?s likely that you will come in contact with your creditors while filing for bankruptcy. Some creditors are willing to accept a percentage of the total owed, or to suspend interest and penalty fees. Make sure that you get written documentation of any offer they make. Any agreements creditors have made will affect bankruptcy.

TIP! Carefully choose which bankruptcy is best for you. You may have more than one bankruptcy option available to you.

Understand the rules and laws before submitting your petition for bankruptcy. If you do not file for bankruptcy properly, you might run into a lot of different issues. If you make an egregious mistake, the judge might even dismiss your case. Do the proper research on bankruptcy before taking the next step. If you take care of this now, you can avoid problems going forward.

TIP! If creditors or harassing you, take advantage of the automatic stay bankruptcy provides to immediately stop the harassment. You cannot avoid emotional stress when dealing with a deluge of debt.

Before you decide to declare bankruptcy, make sure that a less-drastic solution isn?t more appropriate. For example, you may want to consider a credit counseling plan if you have small debts. Some creditors will work with you to help you pay off your debt with lower interest rates, lower late fees, or an extended loan period.

TIP! Once you have met with an attorney, you may be given a telephone number for your creditors to confirm you are filing bankruptcy. Then, a creditor can just call the number to verify that the money owed them is involved with a bankruptcy settlement.

As you?ve read, you can file bankruptcy several ways. Don?t let the amount of information overwhelm you! Take some time to think about the tips you have read here and how they apply to your situation. You are sure to make thoughtful and beneficial decisions this way!

Why College Students Can't Smoke Pot in States Where Pot-Smoking Is Now Legal

Voters may have?legalized marijuana in Colorado and Washington, but dorm-room tokers should hold off on that celebratory bong rip. The Associated Press?reported today that public universities and colleges in the two suddenly pro-pot states, despite this month's successful ballot measures, intend to keep enforcing anti-pot policies on their campuses. Here's why state schools will continue cracking down on marijuana ? for now:

RELATED: Suddenly, Pot Is Legal in (Part of) the United States

The feds

Voters out west might think there's nothing wrong with getting high, but the Justice Department still does. And as long as the federal government stays committed to treating pot as a Schedule 1 drug, school administrators err on the side of complying with big government. Nothing looks worse than a DEA task force busting down the doors of your students' grow house.?

RELATED: The Future of Marijuana Legalization Looks... Cloudy

Funding?

Public higher education might get most of its funding from states, but when local governments struggle to balance their budgets ? and they still are ? then federal funding becomes increasingly crucial. As University of Washington student reporter Jillian Stampher notes, Initiative 502 may have legalized pot in the state, but it didn't override 1990's Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. "The act prohibits universities and colleges from allowing drugs on campuses in order for the schools to receive federal funding," she writes. Especially at big schools where reputations are staked on research, administrators won't be likely to wage a fight that dangles precious federal funds in the balance.

RELATED: Marilyn Monroe Gets High

The?guideline waiting game?

The feds have made themselves quite clear on this issue, but state governments where pot is suddenly legal have some clarifying to do on their expectations.?Eastern Washington University deputy police chief Gary Gasseling says his department won't deviate from policy until the state Liquor Control Board creates rules on pot. Until then, he says, "The drug-free environment is going to remain in place."

RELATED: 70 Percent of College Students Have Forgone Textbooks Because of Price

Most students still can't smoke anyway

The new laws treat recreational pot like alcohol, meaning you'll have to be 21 to smoke. Schools in both states allow alcohol consumption on campus for students over 21 ? but just barely. You have to drink in your dorm rooms with the doors closed, when no underage students are present. Rather than devising a new set of complex rules governing the few students of age who can smoke pot, school administrators are sticking to easier guidelines: no one, nowhere,?no way.

RELATED: How Bad Does It Have to Get Before D.C. Gets Bipartisan?

Crowd control

Students at schools across the country flout the law every April 20th in huge public smoke-outs. But none of them go as hard on 4/20 as the University of Colorado, host to an annual 10,000 member THC celebration that The Chronicle of Higher Education calls "the largest on any university campus." This year, the school cracked down on the event (cutting into a performance from Wyclef Jean) because it's just gotten too darn rowdy, according to CU spokesperson Bronson Hilliard. "It?s not about the war on drugs," he told the school's newspaper. "It?s about a crowd that?s gotten too big and too unsafe for the conditions here. It was simply saying that campus can no longer accommodate a crowd of that size." School administrators will be damned if they let just any old ballot initiative give hooligans the freedom to organize such festivities.?

Local bookseller observes positive reading habits of 'Facebook generation'

The Facebook generation is reading strong according to a recent survey, and a local bookseller said he has observed part of the trend in a Memphis bookstore.

"I've been a bookseller for 35 years. Publishers have been speaking directly to that demographic recently and that's nothing but good," said The Booksellers at Laurelwood manager Eddie Burton.

According to the report from Pew Research Center, 8 in 10 Americans between the ages of 16 and 30 have read a book in the past year. That's compared to about 7 in 10 adults in general.

Of the the younger adults surveyed some 75 percent read a print book, 19 percent read an e-book and 11 percent listened to an audiobook.

Among Americans who read e-books, those under the age of 30 are more likely to read their e-books on a cell phone or computer than on an e-book reader.

The Memphis Public Library offers hundreds of e-book checkouts in their digital media collection.

The collection allows you to read e-books on ipads, kindles, smartphones and other devices.

Frequent user Kristin Huntley said she loves the digital services that the library offers, and finds it easy to use.

"I love how easily accessible it is. They have also added many more popular titles and authors, such as Dave Eggers," said Huntley.

Burton said he can agree that e-readers contribute to this demographic reading more, since it can be accessed anywhere.

He said since publishers are releasing books like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight and Matched that are directed to this demographic, young Americans are more likely to keep reading.

"10 or 15 years ago you had intermediate books or classics to chose from," said Burton.

However, Burton said he has observed more classic books being purchased by this age group.

He said it's hard to differentiate what is being bought for class requirements or for recreational reading.

"I like to think more and more enjoy great literature," said Burton.

When talking about his daughters - who are in the lower part of this demographic - Burton believes that they are talking about books on Facebook, and that other young Americans discuss books on social media too. Which also contributes to more young adults and teenagers reading nationwide.

Be an excellent driver and buy the 1949 Buick Roadmaster from ...

Rain Man 1949 Buick Roadmaster

Heritage Auctions has gotten its hands on an interesting piece of automotive cinema history. Bidders can now vie for the 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible from the 1988 film Rain Man featuring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. The straight-eight powered convertible is one of two used in filming and features an upgraded rear suspension to cope with the weight of a cameraman and camera equipment. The seller has included several bits of documentation showing where the big Buick was rented by MGM for filming, including insurance receipts and loan agreements.

As it sits, the Roadmaster has an opening bid of $40,000 and is located in Sacramento, California, though we suspect the seller may have a much higher reserve. The auction won't reveal that figure until December 7. You can find out more and see additional photography by heading over to the Heritage Auctions site.

Consider marketing your website as some sort of social club or gathering rather than a simple business website. Facebook and other forms of social media have shown us that people like to communicate. This will also keep people interested in your site. Make membership special by offering widgets that link back to your site as part of the membership package. This is a fabulous way to advertise.

TIP! Always include your keywords in your internal links. Keep your viewers on your site by giving them links to other informational content you have on your site.

Web marketing needs to be taken seriously and researched well. This will help you to find someone to admire and emulate, in a sense. Many of these same people have advice columns or will advise you personally for a fee. When choosing a system for internet marketing, make sure it suits your work style. Success may come slowly at first, but over time you will become better at affiliate marketing.

TIP! You should include a page that has information or videos about the product you are selling. Having information like this about the product available will make people feel more comfortable making the purchase.

Post a video of yourself using the product you?re selling. This allows the customer to see you utilizing the product. Demonstrate all the features of your products and test them extensively. For maximum exposure, post your video on Youtube, your website, blog and any niche forums that allow video submissions.

TIP! It is important to include mobile marketing in your business plan. A great option is to offer texts when there are specials from your site for people to see.

Take advantage of social media websites such as Facebook or Twitter and integrate them into your marketing strategy. These sites allow you to stay in constant touch with your customers, and allow an easy way to contact them to let them know about promotions or updates. Just be sure not to promote too much with tweets and comments. Instead, be sure to provide your readers with posts that are helpful and insightful.

TIP! Try to include a variety of specials available only to people who purchase when they are checking out. For instance, a customer may add one of three specified products to the order at half-price as a ?thank-you? for their business.

To make your internet business a success, take the time to evaluate the competition. Check out what other businesses are doing, and see what improvements they need to make. Find out what areas of service your competition doesn?t provide that you do and highlight these differences on your site.

TIP! Empowering your customers to feel that they make a difference to your business helps them feel invested and valued as a customer. This is an effective marketing strategy.

Start off your website marketing efforts on the small side. Having a reasonably large site is good, but search engines are more likely to rank your site well if it has around ten or twenty thousand pages.

TIP! Your internet marketing plan can include a well-written, public relations page about your business. Add articles that could be used in magazines and newspapers.

Blog frequently to make good use of affiliate marketing. A continuing blog also stands as testament to the enduring value of your products. In addition, you will eventually attract more visitors to your website because you are, in effect, expanding the reach of your website and increasing your search engine rating.

TIP! A frequently asked questions section on your webpage can help you solve the most common customer problems while promoting your products. Ask and answer relevant questions, and incorporate your products into some of your answers.

When promoting your business with online marketing, carefully monitor the information you are offering consumers. The content should be valuable to your customers, and it should be different from content on other sites. You want to put new content on your website so that visitors can learn something new.

TIP! Most advertisements that are short and sweet get the most attention, and therefore are the most successful. Emphasize how little time is needed to place an order, how fast the order is shipped, or how quickly they can expect to see results from the use of your product or service.

One interesting way of doing internet marketing for your site is taking advantage when it comes to image searches. When you add relevant pictures to your site, you will be able to get visitors who are searching for the photos you provide. Visitors who might just be looking for information sometimes end up looking through your site. That makes you more popular and breeds familiarity for your brand.

TIP! Encourage new visitors to your site with a $1 promotion. This will build a ton of buzz for your business.

It is important to use descriptive captions with any images or pictures that you post. The text in these descriptions should include keywords that are relevant to your site in order to increase your search engine results. Giving all of your images appropriate, descriptive captions can make a noticeable difference in your search engine results page standing.

TIP! Use vivid language and images to catch people?s attention. Pad your descriptions with enticing adjectives.

Learn how to use HTML tags. Your important content is indicated by these tags and will be displayed in bold. Search engines see this emphasized content and give it more weight when judging the quality and relevance of your page. Use these tags wisely, and make sure to emphasize the keywords you really want to promote.

TIP! If you?re trying to gain more views on your website, and do better in search engine results, you have to provide unique and original content. Customers want to visit the best website that will fill their needs, and successful websites offer something different from their competitor?s websites.

The database that utilizes customer relationship management software ensures that your Website marketing strategies are more successful. It can help you see past successes and guide you in the ways that your business and marketing strategies should be going. Then, you can tailor your communications to showcase accessories or products that are similar to those that customers have already bought from your business.

TIP! Do you offer a reward system for people who regularly buy your products? This will help you establish a good image for your company and get your customers to order more than once. This is they type of business practice that will drum up chatter about you.

Marketing on the Internet is essential to any business today that wants to be successful. Anyone doing business online can not afford to ignore it. You can make sure your firm maintains a strong Internet presence by taking advantage of these hits and using the art of Website marketing.

How apprenticeships keep Germans working

5 hrs.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Following 12 years of elementary- and high-school education in Germany, 22-year-old Sabrina Kleinsorg had to make a decision for her professional career two years ago.

"Most of my fellow students wanted to go to university, opted for a higher education, but I wanted to earn money immediately, while learning a profession at the same time,"?Kleinsorg?says.

Her own family history includes mostly blue-collar workers, and?Kleinsorg's parents favored an education in skilled crafts and trades for their daughter.

For?Kleinsorg,? the choice was easy: She opted for an apprenticeship in the field of engineering.

Germany's unique apprenticeship program provided an opportunity for?Kleinsorg?to receive hands-on experience on the factory floor, paired with complementary theoretical training at a vocational school.

In 2010, she started a paid three-and-a-half-year apprenticeship program as an industrial electronics technician at U.S. automaker Ford's plant in?Cologne,?Germany.

Today, in her third training year,?Kleinsorg?earns more than $1,200 per month and receives a number of social benefits, including health insurance.

"My friends from school thought it was 'uncool' to train in a technical job, especially as I entered a male-dominated work environment,"?Kleinsorg?says.

"But I was immediately accepted by my male colleagues, and today, I am far better off financially than they are."?

Her?choice also means job security.

In Germany, 61 percent?of all apprentices receive full-time employment at the company where they?train. And the rate is growing, according to the?latest statistics from the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry, DIHK.

Ford Motor Company in Germany states?that nearly 95 percent of all trainees are offered a regular job and stay with the company.

"Many of my friends from high school will have to pay back loans after their college studies and still face an uncertain employment future,"?Kleinsorg?adds.

A?pillar in the crisis
Compared to other countries in the 27-nation European Union, Germany's export-driven economy is going fairly strong despite challenging economic conditions. The overall unemployment rate in Germany is?6.5 percent.

Many other eurozone countries are in recession and burdened with high unemployment rates. The situation is especially troublesome for young Europeans under the age of 25.

According to the European Union statistics office, Eurostat , the youth unemployment rate rose to 22.8 percent in September, up from 21.7 percent? the previous year. In Greece and Spain, that number is over 50 percent. In Germany, the youth unemployment rate is just 8 percent.

"One reason for the so-called miracle of low youth unemployment rates in Germany is our apprenticeship system," says Dr. Andreas Koenig, Head of Section, Technical and Vocational Education and Training at GIZ, an association that supports the German government in the field of sustainable development.

"It is this transfer of knowledge from schools and training programs directly into the work environment and vice versa, which makes the difference," Koenig says.

Courses are designed by employers and government specialists but also include input from Germany's trade unions. Training programs are also regularly adjusted to market needs.

The so-called "dual system" -- split into 60 percent workplace training and 40?percent?classroom-based education -- is widely regarded as a model of business investment in social mobility and in?the country's skilled workforce of the future.

"It is all about building your own work?force on a high-quality basis," says Volker Theissen, manager for learning and development at Ford Europe.

Germany's?apprenticeship system trains approximately 1.5 million people per year and matches the worker's skills with the demands and requirements of today's rapidly changing work environment.

"In the course of our apprenticeship, we learn many important facets about our job, but also a lot about the company. And from the start, we are fully integrated and adopt to our future workplace," says 18-year-old Andr? Etzweiler, an apprentice at Ford in Cologne.

"And, while the training immediately creates a symbiosis between the young worker and his employer, it nevertheless prepares us well for the broader job market in case we cannot or do not want to stay with the company," Etzweiler explains.

Historic?system, with a modern touch
Vocational training in Germany has a centuries-old tradition and dates back to the guild system of the Middle Ages.?From bakers to hairdressers and welders to bank workers, the German system focuses on top-level education in close collaboration with industry.

Germany's small- and medium-size businesses, the so-called?Mittelstand, are highly dependent on the next generation of well-trained workers.

Germany's?Mittelstand?accounts for nearly 70 percent of all exports. Many experts say that these specialized? businesses are the engine of economic growth and a main contributor to Germany's still healthy economy.

"If we want to stay innovative, especially in regard to our foreign competition, then we need young skilled workers with young ideas," says Oliver Huhle, manager at Huhle Steel and Metal Construction, a firm with nearly 100 employees based in Wiesbaden.

"Many of today's business executives in Germany began their career as apprentices, including myself," says 34-year-old Huhle.

The success of Germany's dual-training system has led countries like the United States, China and India to study it as a possible model for their own labor markets.

"We have seen an increasing number of requests in the past year from other countries, inquiring how we cooperate to implement elements of the German system. Just last week, we signed a memorandum of understanding with Italy," says Thomas Renner from the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Berlin.

In times of tight budgets and ailing economies, however,?many international companies have been shying away from long-term investment in a larger work?force. Many foreign corporations fear that long-established socioeconomic structures -- one secret to success in Germany -- might be the missing link abroad.

However,?German?experts?say that core elements would be adoptable in other markets.

"If other countries, such as the United States, want to implement the system, it does not require the enormous state support that you see in Germany,"?Theissen from Ford Europe says.

"Companies can easily initiate cooperation and exchange with already existing technical colleges in any region," he?adds.

While German carmakers, such as Mercedes or BMW, have already exported the system to their factories in the United States, Ford has so far only been offering apprenticeships to young applicants at plants in Germany.

A?demographic challenge
But at Germany's workbenches, the system is facing a major challenge these days: low birthrates.

Mid-sized businesses, especially, face a shortage of qualified applicants, in part due to the demographic changes, but also as a result of strong competition from large companies.

At the end of September, German officials counted more than 33,000 open training positions.

Read more World of Work stories

As a result, German companies are increasingly looking across the borders to meet their needs.

"Several firms in the southern region are now recruiting young people from Spain who want to receive technical training. These companies offer a four-week language course prior to the apprenticeship," says Ulrike Friedrich from DIHK in Berlin.

"And hotels and restaurants in the German state of Thuringia are training adolescents from the Czech Republic and Hungary," Friedrich adds.

In the crisis, one country's loss could be another country's gain.

Latest statistics show that there is a growing influx of immigrants from crisis-stricken nations of the eurozone, including a large number of young workers.

"It is a win-win situation for both sides," Friedrich says.

"The young foreigners will receive high-quality training, fill gaps in small German businesses, but also have the chance to go back to their countries as skilled workers at a later point," she?says.

From creating her title to conjuring her characters for The Pond, Michelle provides detailed insights into her writing process. She also has some advice on how she markets her book.

My Inspiration to Write a Book
By Michelle Dubois

To be honest with you, I never aspired to be a writer.

Never would I have ever thought I could have written a 385 page novel that my readers tell me is one of the best stories they have ever read.

My inspiration to write this story was a dream I had years ago when I was canoeing along in this very beautiful tropical paradise and Garden of Eden.? As I canoed, I came to these very high cliffs on each side of me. As I passed through the cliffs I could see people living inside of them. When I neared the end of the cliffs, people were waiting for me and helped me up to shore. When I got out of my canoe, they took me inside the cliffs where they lived.

The rest of this experience is shared inside of my book.

Creating My Story?s Characters
In order to share this story, I created some strong characters whose role was to get you to this tropical paradise and tell a beautiful story about it. Not only did I create Natowa (who was born Miguel), Marilyn, Michael, Alex, Allen, Quinn, Catharine, Emmanuel, Joseph and Jonathon, but they sprang to life and they wrote the story through a very adventurous and spellbinding journey.

How the Pond became The Pond
The book was named The Pond, for two reasons.

One reason was because there is a mysterious pond that is described in a tropical garden where magical mystery lies, and a secret inside the pond that could change the world.

The second reason is because the pond brings the characters, which are worlds apart, together for a common reason. The reason being is what?s inside the pond.

My AuthorHouse Experience
Okay, so now I wrote this wonderful book, so now what?

Now I have to find someone to publish it.

Being that I didn?t want a publishing company to control how to market my book, I thought that self-publishing was the best opportunity for me. After speaking and researching the services from AuthorHouse, I decided that this was the right publishing company for many reasons.

One of the reasons was that even though I maintain full rights to my book, AuthorHouse had many venues to help me promote my book, including having my book reviewed by Kirkus Indie Review, TV advertising, websites, e-mail marketing campaigns, and one venue that I am definitely going to take advantage of, which is to promote my book to movie producers to be considered for the big screen.

At no cost to me, AuthorHouse, based on my Kirkus Indie Review, submitted my review to be considered for a movie or T.V. show to Meridith Viera Productions. I may have never had this opportunity with another publishing company.

My Future as a Writer
Like my readers, I grew to love the characters in my book and find there is still much room for a continuance of this story to tell. I have started the sequel and I am hoping to launch The Pond II by Christmas.

The other reason I decided to write the sequel is because I find that readers take you much more seriously as a writer when you write a sequel or more than one book of the same genre. If your readers enjoy one of your books, they are much more likely to read another one.

A great way to get readers to follow you is to join discussion groups on websites like Goodreads and Twitter. So my advice to new authors is to always set your book up for a sequel or trilogy.

As for my future as an author, I have grown to love writing and feel it will be a lifelong endeavor for me.

Thank you and I will see you in my dreams!

Galapagos Tortoise 'Lonesome George' may have had relatives after all

Genetic samples showed that some tortoises recently DNA tested were hybrids that had a parent like Lonesome George from the subspecies Chelonoidis abingdoni.

By Megan Gannon,?LiveScience News Editor / November 26, 2012

A giant tortoise named 'Lonesome George' is seen in the Galapagos islands, an archipelago off Ecuador's Pacific coast in 2008. Lonesome George, the late reptile prince of the Galapagos Islands, may be dead, but scientists now say he may not be the last giant tortoise of his species after all.

The death of Gal?pagos tortoise Lonesome George this summer was thought to mark the extinction of a subspecies, but a new study hints that the reptile may not have been the last of his kind after all.

Researchers from Yale University recently trekked to the northern tip of Isabella Island, the largest of the Gal?pagos, and collected DNA from more than 1,600?giant tortoises. The genetic samples showed that 17 of these tortoises were hybrids that had a parent like?Lonesome George?from the subspecies?Chelonoidis abingdoni.

What's more, five of those hybrids were juveniles, suggesting purebred?C. abingdoni?tortoises may still be roaming a remote part of the island.

"Our goal is to go back this spring to look for surviving individuals of this species and to collect hybrids," Yale ecology researcher Gisella Caccone said in a statement. "We hope that with a selective breeding program, we can reintroduce this tortoise species to its native home."

But even if examples of?C. abingdoni?are found on Isabella Island, how did they get there? Lonesome George's species is native to?Pinta Island, 37 miles (60 kilometers) across the seas from the Volcano Wolf area on Isabella Island where the hybrid samples were collected.

These tortoises are massive, reaching nearly 900 pounds (408 kilograms) and almost 6 feet (1.8 meters) in length, and the researchers don't think ocean currents carried them between the islands. The team does suspect, however, that 19th-century sailors did.

Volcano Wolf is nearby Banks Bay, where naval officers and whalers marooned giant tortoises picked up from other islands after they were no longer needed for food. Researchers have previously found other hybrid turtles in the region with genetic ancestry of another tortoise,?C. elephantopus, which was thought to be lost. This species was native to Floreana Island, where it was hunted to extinction some 150 years ago. But the new evidence suggests several members must have been brought to Isabella Island, where they mated with?C. becki?tortoises.

The new findings are detailed in the journal Biological Conservation.

Affiliate Marketing Success Is Within Your Reach - Zurvita Zeal for ...

If you?re thinking of opening up an online business, one thing you need to focus on above all others is Website marketing. There is a tremendous need nowadays to have a good presence on the Internet. This means that it is now the time for you to get into it. These tips can help you start planning with your marketing endeavors.

Any business that plans to finalize transactions online must first be able to guarantee the security of purchasers? information. There are quite a few good services that are both impartial and trustworthy. Some examples include: McAffee and VeriSign are two ways to provide security for your customers and your business transactions and information. It can be costly to offer a secure system, but it is a must.

TIP! A good website relies on interesting graphics but a site that is too busy will detract from your content. When someone comes to your website you have about five seconds to capture their attention and make them want to stay.

Take a hard look at the true value of your service or product. The world?s best marketing efforts can?t overcome the shortcomings of a flawed product. In order to see your sales grow, you should be sure that you are marketing a quality product, one that is superior to your competitors products.

It is important to find the correct niche when you are marketing an Internet business. You cannot sell a product or service if you have no heart in it. It just becomes easier to sell a product or service you are passionate about, as opposed to anything else. So make sure that you targeting the right audience with your marketing efforts.

Think of something to offer folks that no one else is doing. Try drawing cartoons that relate to your website or product, or providing an e-book full of useful information. You can create an excellent hook for your market site by offering propriety merchandise that is not available on any other website.

TIP! Include the word ?limited? in your ad. People turn to Internet shopping as an alternative to what traditional stores offer.

Instead of looking at marketing on the Internet as a career, look at it as a hobby. If it turns out that your website becomes popular and has good potential, then you can consider going into it as a full-time job.

Any banners that you place on your website should not look like banners. Give them the impression that they are links to more content. Many people find banners a real turn-off, so this practice may entice them to click where they otherwise would not have.

Use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a part of your Internet marketing campaign. These social media sites keep you in direct contact with your customers and give you the quickest way to promote sales or promotions. However, beware of being overly promotional in your comments and tweets. You should give them good quality content that will have a marketing message here and there.

TIP! It is important to be listed within Google for proper internet marketing. You need to know what terms people are searching for on Google that relate to your business.

Advertise your company on popular websites online. While there will be some cost involved, it will get you noticed. Look for a site that gets lots of traffic, and this can help you get your name out there.

Advertising is necessary for an online business. Advertising can greatly increase the profits of your business. This will give you an important new outlet to customers.

Try asking for feedback from customers who don?t buy anything. Ask them what you can do to get their business. Perhaps they did not care for your copy, the guarantee or they may have had some other issue.

TIP! Incorporate an automatic electronic signature into your emails as it portrays a more professional image. Your signature is your online business card, so you should distribute it freely.

Internet marketing needs serious research in order to succeed. Pick a mentor that you trust and admire online. There are many out there that can give you a fresh perspective for either free or at a small cost. Once you have chosen a technique you want to try, stick with it until it proves profitable or shows that you need to move on to a new technique. Keep in mind that this might take time to start, but know that it is well worth your time.

If you want to build trust and to sell products, you need to offer a warranty or some type of guarantee. Your customers will feel more confident in the purchases and provide your company with some credibility. Assuming the risks and giving your costumers a level of security will build your trust level with them.

TIP! Blogging is great for attracting more traffic to your site. Fresh content is key to maintaining your readers? interest.

Your banner ads should stand out from the crowd as much as possible. If you can make your banner ads look different from the norm, you will find that more people will click on it.

High-quality graphics of your products can make or break an online sale. The ability to see products in detail is a feature that customers will appreciate, because it helps to assure them they are getting what they want. Having a section where customers can upload their own photos of products is another great idea. Another effective use of photography is to show how customers changed as a result of using your product.

Interested in advertising over email? Make sure your visitors are tempted to give you their email addresses to build your opt-in email list. This is called an opt-in feature, and it allows your visitors to sign up for free newsletters or offers in exchange for their email. It is much easier to get people?s email addresses if you offer them a chance at a tempting prize.

TIP! An important way to design subsequent online marketing campaigns is to monitor and measure feedback relating to promotional programs, or concepts you have launched in the past. Once you launch an online event, promotion or initiative, keep an eye out for how people respond on blogs, forums, etc.

Now you understand why your business needs this advantage. This can be approached in a number of ways. There is a plethora of information on jumping into it. Using the information and tips available will help you further your goals towards you own successful affiliate marketing campaign.

Casey Anthony detectives overlooked Google search

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? The Florida sheriff's office that investigated Caylee Anthony's death confirmed Sunday that it overlooked a computer search for suffocation methods made from the little girl's home on the day she was last seen alive.

Orange County sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves said the office's computer investigator missed a June 16, 2008, Google search for "fool-proof" suffocation methods. The agency's admission was first reported by Orlando television station WKMG. It's not known who performed the search. The station reported it was done on a browser primarily used by the 2-year-old's mother, Casey Anthony, who was acquitted of the girl's murder in 2011.

Anthony's attorneys argued during trial that Casey Anthony helped her father, George Anthony, cover up the girl's drowning in the family pool.

WKMG said sheriff's investigators pulled 17 vague entries only from the computer's Internet Explorer browser, not the Mozilla Firefox browser commonly used by Casey Anthony. More than 1,200 Firefox entries, including the suffocation search, were overlooked.

Whoever conducted the Google search looked for the term "fool-proof suffication," misspelling "suffocation," and then clicked on an article about suicide that discussed taking poison and putting a bag over one's head.

The browser then recorded activity on the social networking site MySpace, which was used by Casey Anthony but not her father.

A computer expert for Anthony's defense team found the search before the trial. Her lead attorney, Jose Baez, first mentioned the search in his book about the case but suggested it was George Anthony who conducted the search after Caylee drowned because he wanted to kill himself.

Not knowing about the computer search, prosecutors had argued Caylee was poisoned with chloroform and then suffocated by duct tape placed over her mouth and nose. The girl's body was found six months after she disappeared in a field near the family home and was too decomposed for an exact cause of death to be determined.

Many jurors apparently went into hiding amid public outrage over the verdict and refused to comment, but two have said prosecutors couldn't conclusively prove how Caylee died.

Prosecutors Linda Drane Burdick and Jeff Ashton didn't respond to emails from The Associated Press on Sunday.

But Ashton told WKMG that "it's just a shame we didn't have it. This certainly would have put the accidental death claim in serious question."

Baez didn't respond to phone or email messages Sunday from The Associated Press but told WKMG that he expected prosecutors to bring up the search at trial.

"When they didn't, we were kind of shocked," Baez, who no longer represents Anthony, told the station. Her attorney, Cheney Mason, who was also on the trial team, didn't return an email message from AP Sunday, and his office answering service refused to take a phone message.

The sheriff's office didn't consult the FBI or Florida Department of Law Enforcement for help searching the computer in the Anthony case, a mistake investigators have learned from, Nieves said.

AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77

Manufacturers, especially of the boutique variety, know that enthusiasts' PCs can get out of control easily?some of the huge systems and cases we?ve seen here over the years bear that out. So who can blame some system makers for wanting to swing in the other direction? The AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77 ?is exactly the opposite of a towering tower: It?s short and squat, looking like it?s longing to hide behind one of its bigger cousins. The good news is that this desktop?s diminutive dimensions don?t prevent it from achieving most of its gaming goals. But if you want the fastest or most flexible gaming computer out there, even of the small-form-factor style, this is not it.

Design and Features
For the space-challenged, the Mini Gaming PC is ideal. Measuring approximately 15.5 by 9.6 by 13.9 inches (HWD), it takes up not much more space than an average-size subwoofer. Whether it looks better than one of those depends on your personal tastes. Its off-white coloring, accented with tinges of black along the edge of the front panel and on the fan grille on top, isn't the height of chic, but it's not bad. More problematic are the handles. We appreciate having them attached to the front and rear sections of the top panel, as they make this system even simpler to carry from place to place. But we don't like how much they flex when you lift the system up; even if they are actually secure, they don?t feel like it.

Something else that not all users will appreciate is evident once you open the Mini Gaming PC?s side panel: This system has limited upgradability due to how tightly packed together its components are. AVADirect has developed some ingenious methods for getting around the space restrictions, such as by having the power supply bay (occupied by an 850-watt PSU) open externally, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 video card secured on the back panel, and the 3.5-inch drive well that opens out the side panel so you can quickly access the 240GB Vertex 3 ?solid-state drive and 2TB Seagate hard drive. But there?s almost no room for removing the giant heat sink atop the Intel Core i7-3770K processor (which has been overclocked from 3.5GHz to 4.4GHz), and good luck getting at the 8GB of included RAM (which can theoretically be increased to as much as 16GB). As for the additional expansion slots?there aren?t any, so forget about popping in, say, a sound card or a PCI Express?based storage device. (At least the Blu-ray combo drive in the sole 5.25-inch external bay would be easy to remove and replace if you wanted.)

To perform surgery inside the Mini Gaming PC at all, you?ll need to unscrew and remove both the handle assembly and the top panel?and even then, the cramped nature of the case means that doing any work will not be painless. AVADirect obviously intended this computer primarily (if not exclusively) for those who are happy with using what comes out of the box.

Connectivity options are fine given how little surface area is available for them. On the right side panel you?ll find the headphone and microphone jack and two USB 3.0 ports; gracing the motherboard?s I/O port on the rear panel are eight USB ports, four each of 2.0 and 3.0; one Ethernet jack; two eSATA ports; and standard three-port audio (rather than surround sound) and S/PDIF out. There are also technically video output ports (HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI), but you don?t need to worry about them because you?ll be using the two DVI ports, HDMI port, and DisplayPort jack on the video card when you hook up the Mini Gaming PC to a monitor.

Should you run into any problems, the Mini Gaming PC is covered by a three-year parts-and-labor warranty, and AVADirect offers free lifetime tech support.

Performance
AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77The Mini Gaming PC unsurprisingly held its own against similarly equipped systems we?ve tested recently, though it took first place in only one of our tests. That would be Futuremark PCMark 7 overall system benchmark test, on which it scored 6,259?not significantly higher than either the Cyberpower Gamer Xtreme 4000SE (6,032) or Falcon Northwest Tiki , but higher nonetheless. On our other tests the Mini Gaming PC performed credibly, scoring 8.99 on our CineBench R11.5 rendering test, and needing 55 seconds to convert a video in HandBrake and 2:28 to apply a dozen filters and effects in Adobe Photoshop CS5. In all these cases the Mini Gaming PC was outmatched by the Editors? Choice Maingear Potenza Super Stock , which needed finished with ratings of 9.57, 51 seconds, and 2:16, respectively.

AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77

Living up to its name, the Mini Gaming PC is also solid for entertainment purposes?but the other systems we?ve reviewed have done better in one area or another. The Cyberpower 4000SE and Maingear Potenza computers beat it on frame rates in Crysis (129 frames per second, or fps, at 1,280 by 720 and with medium details, versus 124fps; the Maingear Potenza, with 65fps, beat both at 60fps when we upped the resolution to 1,920 by 1,080 and the details to high), and the Falcon Northwest Tiki just edged it out with Lost Planet 2 at 1,920 by 1,080 with high details (94fps versus 90fps). Scores in our Futuremark 3DMark 11 gaming graphics benchmark test were a bit closer overall, though the Maingear Potenza reigned supreme with 15,119 at the Entry preset and 5,100 on Extreme?the Mini Gaming PC, with 13,888 and 3,261 respectively, couldn?t quite compete.

Whether the AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77 is an outstanding choice depends on a lot of the attendant factors. Though it wraps everything in a compact, original package, its somewhat cheap design and challenged expandability make it less than absolutely perfect for the gamer who likes to maintain control over the hardware. The Maingear Potenza isn?t much better in that area, admittedly, but with an even smaller footprint, a more mature appearance, superior performance, and a lower price, it compensates nicely for the benefits it takes away. Its handles may make the Mini Gaming PC a little easier to carry around, but otherwise the Maingear Potenza offers more to grab onto.

?I Didn?t Come Back to Jerusalem To Be in a War: What it?s like to be in Israel as the conflict escalates,? by Dahlia Lithwick. Lithwick writes about the intense sadness of life during wartime and wonders when both sides will finally reject war and talk about peace. From Tel Aviv, Jessica Apple discusses the challenges of raising children in a war zone, and the constant terror of air raids and bomb shelters. Janine Zacharia, meanwhile, posits that Israel?s Gaza campaign is doomed, destined only to bring further isolation to the region, and Sarah Tory explains the science behind the country?s high-tech iron dome missile shield.

?Baby Blue Streak: Can I stop swearing before my daughter is born?? by Jessica Grose. Cursing around kids could get them into the habit for a lifetime. What about cursing around fetuses? Grose, many months pregnant, decided to experiment with a curse-free lifestyle for a month. She mostly succeeded?but was the trade-off worth it?

?Bring Back Petraeus: He?s already been humiliated and rehabilitated. Obama should rehire him as CIA director,? by Emily Yoffe. Yes, Gen. David Petraeus had a tawdry affair that exposed his weaknesses to the world. But did he do anything illegal? Yoffe makes a case for Petraeus? rehiring, believing it would strike a blow against America?s sexual puritanism while reconfirming our civil liberties.?

?The Real Lesson of the Petraeus Scandal: We delude ourselves about the way we use technology,? by Christine Rosen. How could a top-ranking general in the U.S. military leave such a massive paper trail of his malfeasance? It helps that no actual paper was involved. Rosen explains how our online communications, freed from the constraints of in-person interaction, may be foolish and strange.

?Who Said It: Marco Rubio or Barack Obama? Willful ignorance of science is a bipartisan value,? by Daniel Engber. In a recent GQ interview, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio refused to say how old he believed Earth to be. Liberals were furious, but his comments actually echoed President Obama?s own. Engber examines the startling equivalence of both parties? denial of science, positing that politicians play by different rules than scientists and pastors.

??Explain Away the Gay: Opponents of same-sex marriage went 0-for-4 in the election. But they have lots of excuses,? by William Saletan. The National Organization for Marriage?the most prominent and active anti-gay-marriage organization?lost all four statewide ballot initiatives. NOM actually ?knew long ago? that it ?faced a difficult political landscape? this year, according to their post-election spin. Saletan explores NOM?s various excuses for their massive loss at the polls, noting that somehow none of them involve the basic fact that more Americans accept marriage equality than ever before.

?Do Coal Plants Really Kill People? Why Romney was right,? by Amanda Schaffer. Both presidential candidates declared themselves friends of coal during this year?s election?a challenge for Romney, who once said that coal production could be toxic. He repeatedly disavowed the comment, but Schaffer argues that he was, in fact, completely accurate: Coal plants release potentially deadly emissions into the air that can damage children?s brains and lungs. That won?t keep future presidential candidates from praising ?clean coal,? though.

?Tax Hike Nation: Republicans always talk tough about not raising taxes. Now they know they have to cut a deal,? by David Weigel. This election cycle, Republicans ran on a strict platform of no new taxes, even for the wealthy. They lost. Weigel discusses Obama?s newfound leverage in allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire, and ponders whether GOP legislators will be wise enough to buck Grover Norquist?s anti-tax pledge.

?Don?t Worry About the Voting Rights Act: If the Supreme Court strikes down part of it, black and Hispanic voters will be just fine,? by Eric Posner and Nicholas Stephanopoulos. As Emily Bazelon recently noted, five members of the Supreme Court appear poised to strike down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act designed to prevent voter suppression of minorities in many Southern states. Eric Posner agrees they might, but argues that this won?t spell doom for minority voters in the South: Another, more obviously Constitutional provision of the Act could be equally effective in preventing disenfranchisement of minorities.

Tips For Drinking Responsibly - Pour Me A Shot

  1. Be aware of your limit.
  2. Sip your beverage.
  3. Eat food when you drink. It?s specifically best to eat high protein foods for example cheese and peanuts, that will help to slow the absorption of alcoholic beverages into the circulatory system.
  4. Cultivate taste. Decide on quality instead of quantity. Educate yourself on the names of fine wines, whiskeys, and beers. Find out what beverage complements what dishes.
  5. Take a drink only if you want one. If someone is attempting to force another drink on you, request ice or perhaps drink a non-alcoholic drink.
  6. Watch out for unfamiliar drinks. Like cocktails such as Hurricanes and various fruit and rum drinks are generally misleading, because the alcohol isn?t necessarily noticeable, plus its hard to space them out.
  7. Pass up a drink occasionally. When at a social gathering, enjoy a nonalcoholic beverage between your alcoholic one to keep your blood alcohol concentration down. Space your alcoholic drinks out to maintain your desired blood alcohol concentration.
  8. When drinking out, in the event you must drive home, have your cocktails with a meal, never afterwards. This will give time for the alcohol to be burned up as well as for it to be absorbed little by little into the circulatory system.
  9. Specify a designated driver. Have somebody accessible who?ll not be drinking and can drive all drinkers home. This is certainly crucial in the event the individual has consumed more than one drink an hour.
  10. Make sure that drinking enhances social relationships instead of impairs them. Provide alcohol as an adjunct to an activity instead of as the principal focus.
  11. Use alcohol cautiously in connection with other medications.Including over-the-counter medications for instance sleep aids as well as cold or cough medications. Alcohol consumption should be avoided whilst taking specific antibiotics, arthritic, anti-depressant, and some other prescription drugs. Seek advice from your personal doctor or even your local pharmacy before you decide to drink while on any prescription medication.
  12. Respect the rights of people who don?t want to drink. It?s regarded as rude or obnoxious to try to get individuals to drink who don?t want to. They might refrain for faith based or health-related reasons, because they are recovering alcoholics, or even they simply might not like the taste plus the effect it has upon them.
  13. Refrain from drinking mixed drinks before eating anything on a hot day. This could result in hypoglycemia, which could lead to lightheaded, some weakness, and also mood change.
  14. Knowing that you may have to operate a vehicle after consuming alcoholic beverages, restrict your intake to a maximum of one drink an hour.

Strong online growth seen this holiday shopping season

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - E-commerce is expected to grow strongly this holiday season, spurred by early online deals, the rise of mobile devices and more offers of free shipping.

ComScore Inc expects online sales to grow 15 percent to 18 percent in the United States this holiday season. Last year, holiday e-commerce spending rose 15 percent to a record $37.2 billion, according to the firm.

Doug Anmuth, an analyst at J.P. Morgan, expects online purchases in the fourth quarter to top 10 percent of total U.S. retail spending for the first time.

"It's still early, but our sense is that we will have a really positive holiday season," said Joel Anderson, head of Walmart.com, the online business of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Wal-Mart expects 600 million online visitors during its holiday quarter, which runs from November through January. That is up 13 percent from the same period last year, according to Anderson.

"We're still on forecasts and off to a good start," he added.

The holiday season is crucial for retailers because that is when they generate the most revenue and a big chunk of their earnings.

Thanksgiving and the days following, which include what is traditionally the busiest online shopping day, Cyber Monday, are more important this year as retailers lure consumers with earlier promotions.

"This trend could drive a disproportionately higher percent of overall holiday spending to the first half of the period," said Brian Pitz and Brian Fitzgerald, Internet analysts at Jefferies. "Heavy promotions would be needed later on to achieve the growth rates of last year."

Cyber Monday online spending is forecast to jump 30 percent this year, versus growth of 22 percent last year, according to comScore data compiled by Jefferies. Last year, Cyber Monday was the busiest online shopping day, with $1.25 billion in sales, according to the data.

Starting on Thanksgiving, Wal-Mart will send early online deals to customers who connect with the retailer via email, Facebook Inc or by downloading its mobile shopping application to their smartphones.

Fab.com, an online design website, said sales more than tripled in the first half of November from the same period a year earlier.

"Last year we didn't see that spike until Black Friday," said Fab Chief Executive Jason Goldberg. "This holiday season started much earlier."

The spread of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, will also drive online sales growth this holiday, analysts said.

J.P. Morgan's Anmuth estimates that mobile shopping will account for 12 percent of holiday e-commerce spending in the United States in the fourth quarter, up from 3 percent in the same period of 2010 and 9 percent last holiday season.

Some mobile shopping represents a shift from personal computers to smartphones and tablets, rather than extra spending. However, Anmuth said the rise of mobile devices is fueling a faster switch to online commerce from physical retail.

Free shipping will also be a major driver of online sales growth this holiday, according to Anmuth and others.

More than half of consumers will abandon online shopping carts if they have to pay for shipping, recent data from comScore showed.

Retailers have responded by offering more free shipping for online purchases. Between 50 percent and 60 percent of online transactions this holiday will come with free shipping, according to Shawn Milne, an analyst at Janney Capital Markets.

Psy's "Gangnam Style" video becomes YouTube's most viewed

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - South Korean rap star Psy's music video "Gangnam Style" on Saturday became the most watched item ever posted to YouTube with more than 800 million views, edging past Canadian teen star Justin Bieber's 2-year-old video for his song "Baby."

The milestone was the latest pop culture victory for Psy, 34, a portly rap singer known for his slicked-back hair and comic dance style who has become one of the most unlikely global stars of 2012.

Psy succeeded with a video that generated countless parodies and became a media sensation. He gained more fame outside his native country than the more polished singers in South Korea's so-called K-Pop style who have sought to win international audiences.

YouTube, in a post on its Trends blog, said "Gangnam Style" on Saturday surpassed the site's previous record holder, Bieber's 2010 music video "Baby," and by mid-day "Gangnam Style" had reached 805 million views, compared to 803 million for "Baby." Within a few hours, "Gangnam Style" had gone up to more than 809 million views.

"Gangnam Style" was first posted to YouTube in July, and by the following month it began to show huge popularity on YouTube with audiences outside of South Korea.

"It's been a massive hit at a global level unlike anything we've ever seen before," said the YouTube blog.

The blog also said the "velocity" of the video's popularity has been unprecedented for YouTube.

In his "Gangnam Style" video the outlandishly dressed, sunglass-wearing Psy raps in Korean and dances in the style of an upper-crust person riding an invisible horse.

The song is named after the affluent Gangnam District of Seoul and it mocks the rampant consumerism of that suburb. Psy, whose real name is Park Jai-sang, is no stranger to wealth as his father is chairman of a South Korean semiconductor company.

His parents sent him to business school in the United States but he confesses that he bought musical instruments with his tuition money. He later graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston and won fame in South Korea with his 2001 debut album.

The viral success of "Gangnam Style" on YouTube also has translated into strong record sales. In late September, the song jumped to the top of the British pop charts and it also has sold well in other countries.

Popular parodies of the "Gangnam Style" video included one featuring the University of Oregon's duck mascot, and another done in the "Star Trek" language Klingon.

The official YouTube view count for Gangnam Style represents only the figure for the original video posted to the site, but copycat versions, parodies and videos by people commenting on the song have been posted to the site and elsewhere on the Web.

Counting all those different versions, "Gangnam Style" and its related videos have more than 2.2 billion views across the Internet, said Matt Fiorentino, spokesman for the online video tracking firm Visible Measures.

"Without the dance, I don't think it would have been as big as it is," Fiorentino said. "And the other thing is, Psy has a unique sense of humor which comes through in the video. He doesn't take himself too seriously."
