Microsoft has received quite some criticism after being the first to unveil its next generation gaming console. Since then, the Redmond-based company has tweaked the device's policies quite a bit, dropping the always-online DRM protection and simplifying the sharing of games. In addition to its price, Sony's PlayStation 4 also has a small advantage in the form of a faster GPU.
Rumour has it though that Microsoft will increase the clock frequency of the GPU in the Xbox One, leveling its performance with that of the PlayStation 4. A second rumour, which seems less likely, is an increment in the memory capacity from 8 GB to 12 GB. This could have something to do with DirectX 11.2, another ace up Microsoft's sleeve for the Xbox One. Using "Tiled Resources", larger textures can be allocated to the memory, significantly enhancing the level of detail that can be displayed without generating additional load on the graphics card. As mentioned, this does require part of the memory, which could warrant the upgrade.
The development team behind the Xbox One has asked a variety of game developers for feedback on the hardware, keeping open the possibility for more rigorous hardware changes to better justify the price difference with the PlayStation 4.
