In gun debate, video game industry defends itself

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The video game industry, blamed by some for fostering a culture of violence, defended its practices Friday at a White House meeting exploring how to prevent horrific shootings like the recent Connecticut elementary school massacre.

Vice President Joe Biden, wrapping up three days of wide-ranging talks on gun violence prevention, said the meeting was an effort to understand whether the U.S. was undergoing a "coarsening of our culture."

"I come to this meeting with no judgment. You all know the judgments other people have made," Biden said at the opening of a two-hour discussion. "We're looking for help."

The gaming industry says that violent crime, particularly among the young, has fallen since the early 1990s while video games have increased in popularity.

There are conflicting studies on the impact of video games and other screen violence. Some conclude that video games can desensitize people to real-world violence or temporarily quiet part of the brain that governs impulse control. Other studies have concluded there is no lasting effect.

Biden is expected to suggest ways to address violence in video games, movies and on television when he sends President Barack Obama a package of recommendations for curbing gun violence Tuesday. The proposals are expected to include calls for universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Obama appointed Biden to lead a gun violence task force after last month's shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that left 20 children and six educators dead.

Gun-safety activists were coalescing around expanded background checks as a key goal for the vice president's task force. Some advocates said it may be more politically realistic ? and even more effective as policy ? than reinstating a ban on assault weapons.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said some 40 percent of gun sales happen with no background checks, such as at gun shows and by private sellers over the Internet or through classified ads.

"Our top policy priority is closing the massive hole in the background check system," the group said.

While not backing off support for an assault weapons ban, some advocates said there could be broader political support for increasing background checks, in part because that could actually increase business for retailers and licensed gun dealers who have access to the federal background check system.

"The truth is that an assault weapons ban is a very important part of the solution ? and it is also much tougher to pass," said Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines are also seen by some as an easier lift politically than banning assault weapons.

The National Rifle Association adamantly opposes universal background checks, as well as bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines ? all measures that would require congressional approval. The NRA and other pro-gun groups contend that a culture that glamorizes violence bears more responsibility for mass shootings than access to a wide range of weapons and ammunition.

In a 2009 report, the American Academy of Pediatrics declared, "The evidence is now clear and convincing: Media violence is one of the causal factors of real-life violence and aggression."

The report focused on all types of media violence. But for video games in particular, the pediatricians cited studies that found high exposure to violent ones increased physical aggression at least in the short term, and warned that they allow people to rehearse violent acts. On the other hand, it said friendly video games could promote good behavior.

A wide spectrum of the video game industry was represented at the meeting with the vice president, including the makers of violent war video games like "Call of Duty" and "Medal of Honor" and a representative from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, which sets age ratings that on every video game package released in the United States.

The vice president met Thursday with representatives from the entertainment industry, including Motion Picture Association of America and the National Cable & Telecommunications Association. In a joint statement after the meeting, a half-dozen said they "look forward to doing our part to seek meaningful solutions" but offered no specifics.

Biden, hinting at other possible recommendations to the president, said he is interested in technology that would keep a gun from being fired by anyone other than the person who bought it. He said such technology may have curtailed what happened last month in Connecticut, where the shooter used guns purchased by his mother.

The vice president has also discussed making gun trafficking a felony, a step Obama can take through executive action. And he is expected to make recommendations for improving mental health care and school safety.

"We know this is a complex problem," Biden said. "We know there's no single answer."

The president plans to push for the new measures in his State of the Union address, scheduled for Feb. 12.

Report: Samsung Scraps Windows RT Tablet for U.S.

Samsung Ativ Tab Windows RT

Samsung won't be releasing its Windows RT tablet in the U.S. and it's "unclear" what the South Korean tech giant plans to do with the device in other global markets, according to a report by CNET.

Samsung executive Mike Abary, who runs the company's U.S. PC and tablet operations, told the tech site that plans to release the Ativ Tab were scrapped after feedback from retail partners convinced the company that demand for the Windows RT device wasn't particularly strong.

Samsung did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Microsoft released Windows RT last year as an ARM-optimized variant of its new flagship operating system Windows 8, which like previous versions of Windows runs on x86 chips made by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.

Samsung's Ativ Tab was built on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors, which are based on the ARM architecture. ARM offers a less powerful but also less power-hungry alternative to typical x86 chips, which is why it's come to dominate mobile devices like tablets demanding a processor that can help extend battery life as much as possible.

But Abary told CNET that "[t]here wasn't really a very clear positioning of what Windows RT meant in the marketplace, what it stood for relative to Windows 8, [or] what was being done in an effective manner to the consumer." The executive added that Samsung's own research indicated that educating consumers about the OS would require "a lot of heavy lifting" and a "pretty heavy investment."

Samsung isn't the only Microsoft partner that's been dubious about the new platform.

Last June, Microsoft unveiled its own Windows RT tablet, the Surface , a move that reportedly ticked off hardware partners like Acer and Asus who felt the software giant was shouldering into their turf and potentially upsetting an ecosystem balance that has defined the PC market for years.

Meanwhile, Hewlett-Packard scrapped plans for a Windows RT tablet just a week after Redmond revealed its own plans for the Surface. Microsoft itself admitted last July that the move could be alienating partners.

Released last October and accompanied by an advertising blitz, the Surface RT hasn't performed as well in the market as Microsoft may have liked. The software giant reportedly slashed new orders for the tablet from 4 million to 2 million late last year. In early December, IHS iSuppli projected fourth-quarter Surface RT sales of around 1.3 million units?not too shabby in terms of numbers, but down from more optimistic earlier forecasts.

Microsoft is also planning to release another version of the Surface running Windows 8 Pro and using Intel chips. The Surface Pro is slated for release sometime this month.

Confirmed: Lance Armstrong Will Confess To Doping In An Exclusive Interview With Famed Sports Announcer Oprah Winfrey

ESPN?- Lance Armstrong will admit to doping during his famed cycling career in an upcoming interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to USA Today Sports. The newspaper cites a source who says that while Armstrong will confess, it is unlikely he will go into specific details about his doping. The interview will tape Monday, but won?t air until Thursday. According to Winfrey?s website on Tuesday, this will be a ?no-holds-barred interview? with Armstrong, who was stripped of seven Tour de France titles in October. It will be the first interview with Armstrong since his cycling career crumbled under the weight of a massive report by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The report detailed accusations of drug use by Armstrong and teammates on his U.S. Postal Service teams. It caused him to lose most of his personal corporate sponsors, and he recently stepped down from the board of Livestrong, the cancer-fighting charity he founded in 1997.

?

Oprah?s cool I guess? I mean at least he?s not doing a sit down interview with the ageless douchebag Bob Costas. Hearing that 85 year old, 4 foot twerp drop another monologue about doping and society and role models and blah blah blah who gives a fuck would drive me to the point of actual insanity.

Anyway in the grand scheme of things this is a whole lot of nothing. Lance Armstrong is one of, if not the, biggest frauds in athletic history. Outside of the (still) incredible comeback from cancer the only reason anyone ever gave a fuck about what he did was because he was shoving American success right in the face of everyone in the world riding a bike around France. Outside of that not a single person in this country cares about competitive bike riding past the age of 12. If his reign of success is?fraudulent, everything about his athletic achievements are essentially useless from a fan perspective. It?s not like his impact is felt in deeper corners of the game like Bonds and Clemens.?Cycling blows and Lance was the only reason anyone ever pretended to think about it.

Just a few more days of this media circus and we can stop hearing about this for a long time and Lance can continue on with his storied career as an asshole marathon runner.

Samsung Galaxy S II Plus brings Jelly Bean and optional NFC to aging superstar

Samsung has announced the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S II Plus, bringing another Galaxy handset to an already crowded market.

Remember the Samsung Galaxy S II? Yes, the phone that really saw Samsung hit the big time in Android? It had our man skydiving out of a plane. Well the venerable old Android has been updated by Samsung, looking to capitalise on the good name of the handset.

The big sell of the Samsung Galaxy S II Plus seems to be the updated software. It will launch on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, along with a full run of the normal Samsung customisations and additions.

You'll get pop-up video and S Voice, for example, features that made their debut on the Samsung Galaxy S III, along with some of the other TouchWiz tweaks like Smart Stay, S Beam and so on.

In terms of hardware, you get a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 pixel resolution Super AMOLED display and a 1.2GHz dual core processor, with 1GB of RAM.

There's 8GB of internal memory, with microSD card support so you can add up to 64GB for expansion. There's an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 2-megapixel camera on the front.?

NFC is listed as optional, so we're guessing this will be only in selected markets (along with the S Beam feature), but otherwise you get GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi and a bunch of sensors as you'd expect. It's a 3G model, there's no 4G being added here.

The NFC model will be slightly thicker, adding 0.4mm to the body, not that you'd notice, that otherwise measures 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5mm (for the non-NFC model) and weighs just 121g.

The battery is a 1650mAh cell, which you'd hope would see you through most of the day, given the fairly restrained hardware (by modern standards).

No word on pricing or availability, we're not sure that this phone would make it into the UK or US given the already saturated market. The specs suggest it will be a reasonable mid-range handset, in a design that's somewhat iconic in the world of Android phones.

Pocket (for Mac)

Pocket, the cross-platform bookmarking service formerly known as Read It Later, is now available to OS X?users. Like the browser extension and mobile apps, Pocket for Mac lets users save Web pages, video clips, and images to their accounts and access them at a later time.

So why would you use Pocket for Mac desktop client instead of the browser-based Pocket? The tweaked user interface features an improved icon layout and, more importantly, you can access content without an Internet connection. Previously, the only way to view your saved clips was to log into the Pocket website. Pocket for Mac may prove a highly valuable tool if you're a frequent Web reader.

Getting Started With Pocket
You're prompted to sign into your Pocket account, or create one, after you launch Pocket for Mac. You then arrive at a screen that's vertically split into two portions. The left column is your List of saved content. The larger, right area is where Pocket display content. You're given two options after logging in: "Save From Browser" and "More Ways to Save."

The former takes you to getpocket.com/add where you can install a Safari browser extension. Once the extension is installed, you can save any page to Pocket by clicking the Pocket icon located left of the browser's address bar. You can also add tags that should help you better organize content. The latter option displays the many ways you can save to Pocket via third-party apps (there are over 300 in total including the likes of Dolphin Browser HD?and Flipboard)

The Pocket for Mac Experience
Pocket for, regardless of which platform, pushes articles, images, and more to your Mac desktop. The pages, meme images, and other interesting online finds that I'd previously saved using mobile apps populated my Pocket for Mac library soon after I connected my Mac to Wi-Fi. Like the Pocket mobile apps, Pocket for Mac displays web pages (and video clips!) in a stripped down view that eliminates visual clutter and focuses on what's on hand. You can, of course, click an icon that lets you view full pages. However, video, unlike images and web pages, isn't available for offline playback. That may prove an irritant to the YouTube crowd, but you can watch your favorite saved clips when you take your Mac back online.

Pocket also includes a number of tools designed to enhance the app's usability. You can also archive, filter, search, and share content, which makes managing and distributing content a breeze.

The Wrap
Between our laptops, smart phones, tablets, and other Web-enabled devices, we read and view lots of online material?Pocket gives users away to not only save their favorite clips for reading at a later time, but manage them as well. If you're a Mac user who loves clipping and sharing the Web, consider Pocket an essential app.
