How Ylanne (and possibly other judges) will pass judgment on your
This rubric is ? 2012 Ylanne S. If you'd like to use the exact same rubric for your tournament or fight, you may do so as long as you leave my name clearly visible as its author.
Creativity
10 - Description
Points will be awarded for the ability to effectively describe your character's appearance, actions, body and facial language, dialogue, and environment. Excessive use of purple prose, cliches, extended metaphors or similes, or forcibly descriptive language may result in a lower score. Tips: Avoid excessive use of adjectives and adverbs; focus on active verbs; avoid passive verbs; use sensual descriptions (focus on all five senses rather than what is "visible" alone); use description to further the action and develop character.
20 - Character development
Points will be awarded for a well-developed character whose established personality and backstory clearly influence his or her behavior and choices during the fight. This may be expressed through dialog, stream of consciousness, and description of the character's actions. More points will be awarded for continued development of character throughout the course of the fight; people are rarely stagnant in personality and perspective, particularly when placed in a confrontational situation such as combat. Excessive use of flashbacks, purple prose, or long passages describing a character's backstory may result in a lower score. Tips: Use actions and dialog to reinforce and direct character development; pay attention to small details like accents, turns of phrase, gestures, or habits; consider the psychological impact of past experiences on present behavior; and only provide a few details or hints at a time in order to leave the reader wanting to learn more.
20 - Command of language
Points will be awarded for the command of the English language. This extends beyond basic spelling, punctuation, and grammar. More points will be used for effective use or abuse of grammatical structures and punctuation to convey meaning, effective and creative stylistic choices, use of tone to create milieu and guide character development or enrich the environment, and effective use of a wide range of vocabulary. Excessive use of adjectives, adverbs, or passive verbs; inconsistency in verb tense without clear purpose; excessive use of sentence fragments (standalone dependent clauses) without clear purpose; extensive misuse of punctuation without clear purpose; excessive use of fancy or large words for the apparently sole purpose of stringing together multiple large words; and lack of a distinctive voice in the posts may result in a lower score. Tips: Learn what punctuation marks mean, and avoid abusing commonly misused words; proofread your writing; and write for meaning and effect -- in other words, write with clear intention.
Technical Skill
10 - Attention to appropriate properties of physics for stage
Points will be awarded for attentiveness to the laws of physics for the particular stage. Different laws of physics will apply in a space vacuum than in a controlled, indoors environment. Factors such as heat, pressure, and gravitational pull will impact a character's abilities, actions, response times, and inanimate objects. Repeatedly ignoring or defying the laws of physics will result in a lower score.
10 - Attention to character's level of ability or skill as established in profile and limited by restrictions
Points will be awarded for attentiveness to the established levels of abilities or skills of a character, as written in the profile submitted for the tournament. A character with expertise in martial arts may know little to nothing about the handling of a machine gun or a disruptor rifle, and posts with such a character and weapon should reflect that lack of skill. While people may be able to adapt to new situations and attempt to learn on their feet, they do not suddenly gain high levels of skill overnight or in ten minutes with weapons or tactics they have not been trained to use. Power-playing, ignoring the facts about learning and knowledge, and contradicting established information from a submitted profile will automatically result in a lower score.
10 - Strategy development, execution, and adaptation
Points will be awarded for the clear development of a strategy for battle, the consistent execution of that strategy, and adapting the strategy to the opponent's actions. This score is based on out-of-character strategizing, and does not consider the character's in-character thought process in creating and following a strategy in the fight. Complete lack of a strategy will result in a lower score. Strategies that do not adapt to an opponent's tactics and actions will also result in a lower score.
10 - Defensive responses
Points will be awarded for creativity in writing defensive responses to an offensive move in the opponent's post. More points will be awarded for drawing on the opponent's weaknesses as perceived in-character, use of the stage in a defense, and attention to technical detail in the description of the defensive action. Power-playing a defense will result in a lower score. Implausible, unfeasible, or nonsensical defenses will also result in a lower score.
10 - Use of environment or stage
Points will be awarded for creativity in using the environment or stage as part of the strategy, as well as for aiding and augmenting offensive moves and tactics. Environments with limited opportunities for interaction based on nature or a character's characteristics will be taken into consideration when grading. More points will be awarded for innovative, "out of the box" thinking in interacting with and manipulating the environment or stage. Ignoring the environment or stage entirely, particularly when there are ample opportunities to interact with and manipulate the space and its properties, will result in a lower score.
Total Possible = 100
