It's hard to find good workers, HR execs say

Mark Lennihan / AP

People wait to talk with potential employers at a job fair in New York last December. Despite the high jobless rate, some say it's hard to find good workers.

By Allison Linn

The slowly improving job market may be exacerbating a problem you may not know this country had: Finding good workers to fill open positions.

A new survey from human resources firm Right Management finds that 27 percent of human resources executives often have trouble finding the right person for key positions. That?s up from 23 percent a year ago.

That may come as a shock to the millions of people who are unemployed, but the lack of qualified candidates is something executives were even complaining about during the depths of the recession.

The Right Management survey of 631 human resources officials and senior executives found that another 61 percent of respondents occasionally have trouble finding the right candidate for the job, about the same as last year. Just 13 percent said they seldom if ever have that trouble, a decrease from last year. The survey was conducted late last year.

Right Management officials said the findings could be a sign that the job market is improving. The economy has been adding jobs, but employment growth has been painfully slow. The unemployment rate stood at 8.2 percent in March, with 12.7 million people actively looking for a job.

Experts say there is legitimate shortage of workers in some fields, such as highly specialized manufacturing jobs.

?But some also say that employers grew spoiled during the recession, and either aren?t looking hard enough or aren?t willing to do things like pay moving expenses or provide some training for a new employee.

One problem is that workers who were laid off from a job in a declining industry may need to retrain for a job in a growing industry. That usually requires some money. The New York Times reported Monday that those jobseekers may face tougher times ahead, since federal funds to retrain the jobless are drying up.

News: Southport residents to vote on community center

UPDATE: Residents in the Town of Southport voted down a controversial new $3.5 million community center in a special referendum Monday.

About 2,200 residents -- representing a third of the registered voters in the town -- turned out at the Southport Town Hall for the vote.

There were 1,155 no votes cast and 1,045 yes votes, according to an unofficial count taken after the polls closed. That included absentee ballots. All the votes will be recounted to assure accuracy.

The referendum called for approval of $3.5 million to build a 27,000-square-foot, multiuse building, based on recommendations from a feasibility committee.

Town officials said the existing community center at Chapel Park in Pine City has outlived its usefulness and isn't large enough to handle the demand for recreational space.

But even though the town already has the funds set aside for the project, some residents claim it's too much money to spend on a new facility that only a small fraction of residents would use.

According to Town Board member Etta Kay Dewey, who opposes the project, only about 3 percent of the town's residents used the center in 2011.

The current building has one 1,370-square-foot room that is frequently booked, said town recreation supervisor David Ellis, along with a small kitchen and office space.

The center was rented 63 times in 2011, according to Dewey.

The new building would feature a multipurpose gym, indoor walking track, two community rooms, a full kitchen, small conference rooms and office space.

Analyst Predicts Revamped, 4-Inch iPhone 5

iPhone 5 mystery 275

The next iPhone will have a sleek, new look featuring a larger screen and a single unibody frame, analyst Brian White with Topeka Capital Markets predicted in a note to investors on Monday.

White said he gleaned insider information about Apple's next-gen iPhone during a recent tour in China and Taiwan, where he visited various tech suppliers. He believes the next iPhone will boast a larger, 4-inch screen (current models have a 3.5-inch screen) and high-speed 4G LTE connectivity.

The hype around the iPhone 5 is growing in Asia, he added, and people have started speculating about when the new phone will be launched. Some suppliers will likely begin producing components for the next iPhone in June ? but don't get too excited for an early summer launch just yet. While believes the device won't launch until sometime in August or September.

He added that the iPhone 5 will be the most significant upgrade yet, leading to an "extraordinary" December quarter, "dwarfing" past iPhone launches.

"This new, sleek look will be the most important reason that consumers decide to upgrade to the iPhone 5, while we believe the addition of 4G will also attract buyers of the new device," White wrote in the note.

Rumors of a 4-inch iPhone 5 have been making the rounds for months. Back in January, 9to5Mac claimed to have "reliable sources" at Foxconn who said several possible models of the next iPhone have been floating around, all of which included screens of at least 4 inches.

Meanwhile, White last week predicted that Apple's share price will touch $1,000 within 12 months. A $1,000 share price would push Apple's market cap (the number of shares outstanding multiplied by the stock price) to about $1 trillion. If so, Apple would become the world's first trillion-dollar company.

The latest iPhone, the iPhone 4S, came out in October. For more, see PCMag's full review and the slideshow below.

Change Your Life With These Great Cooking Tips

Some people find successful cooking to be virtually effortless, while others consider cooking to be an elusive art. Becoming good at cooking isn?t difficult if you educate yourself a little and persevere. Learning to cook is an extremely useful skill to have as everyone has to eat! This article includes some great tips for the beginner cook and for the experienced cook, as well.

One of the things that you will need to realize when you are making meats or fish is that you need to spread your seasoning evenly. Adding too much seasoning in one area of your food can reduce the flavor or lead to a tangy taste that will reduce the quality of your meal (Wok).

You should try juicing if you do not like the taste of vegetables. It is very easy to mask the taste of the vegetables by juicing them with fruits that are full of flavor. Spinach, zucchini and carrots can easily be juiced with apples, strawberries and pears to make a delicious drink that is full of vitamins and nutrients.

Using the right sauce when barbecuing can make a very big difference to the final result. Having a good barbecue sauce can enhance the flavor of whatever meat one is going to be cooking. Once the right sauce has been found it should be glazed on the meat before cooking for best results.

Don?t get caught out when entertaining. If you are entertaining 8 or more people, aim to serve four different kinds of hors d?oeuvres. Each from one of the following categories: fish or shellfish, meat, vegetables and cheese. Bite-sized pieces are ideal, with the exception of veggies for dipping. When figuring out the amount of hors d?oeuvres, try to offer 6 pieces per person per hour.

You can avoid sticky rice by removing the starch. To do just that wash the rice several times until the water coming from the rice is crystal clear. Remove all the water, and let the rice sit for 20 minutes. Adding a few drops of lemon to the water before cooking also helps to separate the grains.

If you want to cut the corn off of the cob the best thing to do is do it one ear at a time and hold it at an angle in a pan. Use a sharp knife and cut it as close to the cob as you can use the milky juices over top of the corn for extra flavor.

Make sure you are storing your herbs and spices in a cool, dark space. Many factors can cause herbs and spices to lose their flavor. Light, humidity, and heat can all cause them to lose some of their flare. To avoid this, make sure you are storing your herbs somewhere like a cool cabinet.

Trying to cook with little children running around under your feet? Give them something to do. Any small and simple task will make them feel like they are helping with the meal, and it will keep them out of trouble for a little while as you try to finish up the dish that you are working so hard on.

Use nonstick cookware when you want to cook healthier. Nonstick pans have a coating on them that makes food easily slide out, even with no oil. This is great for when you are trying to control the fat in your diet. If you do use oil, you will have to use far less. What?s more, nonstick pans are so easy to clean!

There is no longer a need to hold onto any fear of the kitchen. By following these ideas and learning the basics of cooking, you will be rewarded. With a little time and practice you will be whipping up gourmet meals to impress your friends in no time at all.

Papers, essays, articles, and journals are written every year by professionals and students alike for the purpose of sharing their ideas and the results of their research. And in the course of their research, they study the works of other people in order to form ideas of their own and even locate other concepts that can help support them. By consulting these works, it is inevitable that the writer incorporates the ideas into his or her own paper in order to substantiate his or her views. Since the writer is using someone else?s ideas and works, it is important that credit is given to these people by citing them as sources. In addition to acknowledging the work of others, citing sources gives the paper credibility and enables others to find those materials to acquire more information and even determine its authenticity or authority.

With so many rules and things to learn about the APA format, it is no wonder that many find themselves feeling frustrated and stressed. Nowadays, web research has become the number one source for finding research material. As such, electronic sources make up a majority of the sources that one uses in a paper. And these types of sources require special style concerns that should be followed which can cause confusion even in the best of us. Focusing on the content of the paper is of utmost importance and the additional worry of correctly writing sources is something that everyone can do without. For those who wish to eliminate this worry altogether, the APA format tool is the answer to your problem. With this APA format generator, you don?t need to do additional research in how to properly cite sources. You just have to choose the type of source and input its title to search the database. Then, simply choose the right result and you get the correct form shown to you within seconds. With the reference all laid out for you, the only thing left for you to do is to copy the test and paste it in your document.

?

Obviously, using the APA format tool will help ease the worry and stress you get from having to keep all the guidelines of citing sources in mind. It also will eliminate the possibility of being called on for having an incorrect format. Writing a bibliography has never been easier. One other advantage that you get by utilizing the APA format generator is more time. The necessity of going through examples of references in APA format for magazines, electronic sources, and journals just to write your own references takes up a lot of time. But by clicking a button in this tool, you get the correct format without the expense of time. Instead of spending hours typing out your references and constantly rechecking the format, you can now use that same amount of time polishing the ideas in your paper.
