Apple patent application details magnetic iPad stand for extra-secure mounting

Apple patent application details magnetic iPad stand

A recently published Apple patent reveals the design for a "magnetic tablet configured to rigidly hold a portion of the tablet device in place." You can bet that "tablet device" is the iPad, and judging from the many photos associated with the patent, the stand is meant to mount the slate more securely than your average dock, not to mention the Smart Cover. One scenario, for instance, shows the iPad secured on top of a treadmill, while another depicts the device hanging from the roof of the car. By far the most intriguing example is two iPads connected to each other magnetically, creating a hinge between the two displays. Click through to the source link for a look at Cupertino's other envisioned use cases for this super-strength stand -- though don't get your hopes up on seeing this design hit stores any time soon; the original patent was filed in late 2011.

Bells, applause as Pope Benedict XVI flies out of Vatican

In a dramatic exit from the Vatican, Pope Benedict flew off to the papal retreat Castel Gandolfo. Tourists gathered in St. Peter's Square to watch the momentous occasion. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

To a chorus of bells and a ripple of applause from his closest advisers, Pope Benedict XVI departed the Vatican for the last time as pontiff Thursday.

He emerged from the Apostolic Palace and was saluted by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state, and other senior staff members in the St. Damaso Courtyard before being driven to his helicopter for the journey to his lavish temporary residence.

A crowd of well-wishers was waiting to greet him from the piazza when he arrived by helicopter at his temporary residence at Castel Gandolfo, which is about 20 miles south-east of Rome.

They chanted his name in Italian and cheered wildly as he appeared from the balcony of the building. Some were moved to tears.

"Thank you for your friendship," he said. "I am just a pilgrim."

To coincide with his 5 p.m. local time (11 a.m ET) departure, a final message was posted to the pontiff's official Twitter account.

"Thank you for your love and support," it said. "May you always experience the joy that comes from putting Christ at the centre of your lives."

Although the pope has a helicopter pilot?s licence, the chopper was flown by an Italian air force pilot, as is customary.

Thousands of faithful pack the medieval square outside Castel Gandolfo in Lazio, Italy, to greet Pope Benedict XVI and thank him for his papacy as he settles into his new surroundings.

Due to join the pontiff on the 15-minute flight were his personal secretaries Archbishop Georg Ganswein and Monsignor Alfred Xuereb, along with Monsignor Leonardo Sapienza, the deputy prefect of the papal household, Professor Patrizio Polisca who is the pope's personal physician, and Sandro Mariotti, the pope's butler.

It was a quiet departure, characteristic of his shy demeanor, giving little hint of the historical significance of the event ? the first of its kind for almost six centuries.

Earlier, he said a muted goodbye to his cardinals and closest advisers.

"I will continue to be close to you," he told them in the Vatican's 16th century Sala Clementina, before exchanging individual, private greetings.

"The future pope is among you," the pontiff added, pledging his "unconditional reverence and obedience" to his successor.

He also expressed a desire for the church to work like an orchestra where diverse elements came together in harmony ? yet another reference to his frustration over infighting at the top of the church.

?

As the final day of Pope Benedict XVI's papacy comes to a close, focus turns to the cardinals entrusted to elect the next leader of the church. NBC's Anne Thompson reports on the upcoming conclave and the centuries-old tradition of a secret vote.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, was among 11 cardinals from the United States bidding him farewell on his final day as pontiff.

"It was kind of somber for me," Dolan told TODAY. "To see this gentle, learned, loving holy man, to see him very fragile, to see him having made what I consider to be a remarkably humble and courageous decision, it was very moving, it was a very tender moment."

"I was honored that he remembered my name ? it?s always good when the boss knows your name," he added.

When the doors of Castel Gandolfo closed shorlty after 8 p.m. local time Friday (2 p.m. ET)?it marked the end of his papacy ? a resignation instead of a death. The?distinctive Swiss Guards in attendance went off duty.

The pontiff, who will now be known as pope emeritus, will remain at the papal summer residence for two months until his permanent home in a monastery within the Vatican is refurbished.

'A caring pastor'
NBC News Vatican expert George Weigel said Benedict would be remembered as "the greatest papal preacher since Gregory the Great in the 6th century" and "a caring pastor."

Almost eight years after the death of John Paul II, it's clear Catholics still feel a special affection for the man often called "the people's pope," who was renowned for his compassion and support of human rights. NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports.

Father John Bartunek, a priest and author who works in Rome, added: "One of the characteristics that has struck us is personal humility and sincerity. He has a certain sweetness and openness and he?s always present, always willing to listen and that will also be part of his legacy."

"A lot of the repercussions of his decisions won?t be seen right away," he said.

Thursday's goodbyes were in stark contrast to?Wednesday's public event, where a crowd of more than 100,000?cheered, applauded and waved banners of support as he delivered his final audience at a packed St. Peter's Square.

He assured pilgrims and well-wishers that he was not "coming down from the cross" despite renouncing his office, saying his decision was taken "in full awareness of its gravity and rarity but also with profound serenity of spirit."

An introverted theologian, Benedict is credited with pushing the "new evangelization" and repairing rifts with Jews, but faulted for not taking stronger action as a sex-abuse scandal tarnished the church's reputation and for letting the Vatican bureaucracy run amok.

Vatican watchers say there is no clear front-runner to replace him and Benedict's legacy will loom large as they look to the future.

A Vatican spokesman told the Catholic News Service that the college will probably not meet over the weekend but could gather the following Monday for informal talks to set a date for the conclave and begin talking about priorities for 266th pope.

The pope delivers his final audience in St. Peter's Square as he prepares to stand down.

Under church law, the conclave couldn?t start until March 15, but an amendment this week will allow the cardinals to push up the date as along as all 115 electors are in place. There were supposed to be 117, but one is too sick to attend and another recused himself after being accused of inappropriate behavior with priests.

And the Vatican guesthouse, where the cardinals will stay during the conclave, must be swept for listening devices before they can move in.

The length of the conclave ? with its four secret ballots a day, cast in the Sistine Chapel ? is anyone's guess; it took two days to elect Benedict and three to choose his predecessor, John Paul II.

Dolan, who will be in the conclave, said: "There?s a mixed feeling. You hear cardinals say there is a sense of wanting a new pope as soon as possible, and for that to happen in the most prudent way you need some time for reflection and prayer to get to know each other. But the ?first item on the agenda at the general congregations next week will be 'When well we begin the conclave?'"

Meanwhile, the Vatican announced on Thursday that a 92-year-old French cardinal, Jean Honor?, died on Wednesday. Because of his age, he was not among the 117 cardinals eligible to take part in the conclave.

Plantronics Voyager Legend UC

The Plantronics Voyager Legend UC ($199.95 direct) Bluetooth headset?is a deluxe version of the standard Voyager Legend, which is one of our favorite models. But in addition to working over Bluetooth, the UC version comes with a tiny USB-compatible receiver for hooking up to a PC or Mac for use with Skype, Avaya, IBM, and other UC standard VoIP clients. It's a good choice if you make a lot of VoIP and cellular calls from your desk, and prefer a wireless, mono headset to something like the Plantronics Blackwire 720, which offers a more traditional stereo headset fit and a wired USB connector. That said, the Voyager Legend UC's?price gives us pause, the same way the two-year-old Voyager Pro UC did; the included accessories, while useful, shouldn't double the price.

Note that there's also a separate B235-M version of this product; that one is Microsoft-certified and optimized for use with Microsoft Lync 2010 and Microsoft OCS 2007 only. This review focuses on the standard Voyager Legend UC. In this short review, I'll just focus on the differences with the UC model; for more on how the headset itself fits, works, and sounds, read our full review of the original Voyager Legend. With both models, the headset itself is the same.Plantronics Voyager Legend UC

The UC version of the Voyager Legend comes with a bunch of accessories. The biggest news is the tiny USB UC receiver, which plugs into a free port on your PC or Mac and lets you make calls with VoIP clients like Skype. Also of note is the small desktop dock, which also plugs in via USB and keeps the Voyager Legend charged, thanks to its nifty magnetic power connector not unlike the one on a MacBook Pro. (The original Voyager Legend also has this connector.)

Plantronics also includes a hard plastic carrying case with a smoked, translucent lid. The case holds the headset and the USB receiver. There's a micro USB port on the side, so you can charge the Voyager Legend while it's inside the case, which is a nice touch.Plantronics Voyager Legend UC

Otherwise, the Voyager Legend UC works and sounds just like the original, Bluetooth-only Voyager Legend we liked so much. Sound quality is exemplary in both directions, using both Skype and over Bluetooth. I tested the Voyager Legend when paired with an Apple iPhone 5. As with the regular version, the Voyager Legend UC is a little more susceptible to office fans and outside wind noise, thanks to its long boom mic which can "catch" the breeze and shift around a bit. Plantronics' noise-cancelling circuitry is also still a small step behind what Jawbone has accomplished with the Era Bluetooth headset.

Plantronics also makes available Spokes, a free PC download that makes controlling calls from multiple sources easier. It installs a battery meter for the Voyager Legend UC in your PC's icon tray, and updates your UC presence status whether you're on a mobile call or a PC call?useful stuff to have on your PC.

All told, it's tough to go wrong with the Voyager Legend to begin with. This latest UC version makes it that much tougher to resist, although I think it should cost $150, not $200. Working professionals looking for more range should have a look at the Plantronics Savi 440, which can travel four to five times as far from its source as the Voyager Legend.

Safety is key to private spaceflight's success

Luke Colby / Virgin Galactic

SpaceShipTwo undertook its 23rd glide flight on Dec. 19 in the pre-powered portion of its incremental test flight program. This was a significant flight as it was the first with rocket motor components installed, including tanks. It was also the first flight with thermal protection applied to the spaceship's leading edges.

PALO ALTO, Calif. ? Commercial human spaceflight will need to be much safer than the space shuttle for the industry to really take off, experts say.

NASA's venerable space shuttle program suffered two fatal accidents in its 30 years of orbital service ? the 1986 Challenger tragedy and the 2003 destruction of Columbia, both of which killed all seven astronauts on board.

The space shuttle fleet blasted off a total of 135 times before its retirement in 2011, giving the iconic vehicle a fatal-accident rate of about 1.5 percent. Private spaceflight companies will have to do considerably better than that if they hope to build a viable industry, observers say.

"It's going to have to be at least perceived as being relatively safe," George Nield, associate administrator for commercial space transportation at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, said here earlier this month during a space-entrepreneurship forum organized by Stanford University's Institute for Economic Policy Research. [Space Travel: Danger at Every Phase (Infographic)]

What 'safe' means for spaceflight
While the industry should do its best to prevent accidents, "safe" does not mean no mishaps at all, Nield said, as that's an impossible standard to meet. Planes crash occasionally, after all, but many millions of people still travel regularly by air.

Indeed, the private spaceflight industry should look for inspiration to commercial aviation, which averages about one fatal accident per 1 million operations, he added.

"Will we ever get that kind of safety record for space? I don't know," Nield said. "It's hard. Our difficult environment, more expensive ? there's a lot of reasons why we might not be able to get quite that good. But it's a good target to shoot for."

Preparing for the inevitable
Commercial spaceflight companies need to prepare themselves, their customers and the nation for the inevitability of accidents, however rare they turn out to be, Nield and others said.

It's particularly important for Congress to be informed, to minimize the chances that a mishap inspires a wave of reactionary and potentially industry-crushing regulation.

"You start telling legislators now ? it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," said Andrew Nelson, chief operating officer of XCOR Aerospace, which is selling seats on its suborbital Lynx spacecraft for $95,000 each.

Nield agreed, stressing the need for all the players in the emerging industry to work together on this subject, sensitive though it may be.

"We shouldn't pretend that this is going to be free of risk," Nield said. "We need to work together as a community ? industry, government ? and help the public, the media and our leaders in Congress and the administration to understand the risks involved and the benefits. That is probably the most important thing we can do."

Video: Chances slim that sequester won't happen

>>> the board set of budget cuts becoming law in our land, we still expect to see your goodness prevail. rise up, oh god, and save us from ourselves.

>> could almost be the not of senate these days. barry black opening with a dramatic prayer to avoid the sequester which, of course, is set to kick in tomorrow but there appears to be little if any chance the sequester will not happen. in about 15 minutes , the senate will take votes on rival democratic and republican bills that would avert the sequester but both bills are expected to fail. the democratic bill wards off some cuts focusing spending reductions on farm and defense programs. it also includes tax increases on wealthy americans and the oil and gas industry . meanwhile, the republican plan would keep the $85 billion in cuts but allow president obama to reallocate those cuts. here's the senate majority and minority leaders today.

>> the republican plan what we thought was coming and it did would be like you're told you have to have three fingers cut off and their proposal to send it to the president and have him decide which finger's going to go first. republicans call the plan flexibility. let's call it what it is. it's a pubt.

>> later this afternoon, less than 24 hours before the president's sequester proposal takes effect, we will vote on a senate democratic plan that does more to perpetuate the culture of -- than spending that washington democrats claim to be concerned about.

>> meanwhile, president obama 's scheduled to meet with leaders tomorrow and no resolution is expected from that. joining me now, democratic senator barbara boxer of california. senator boxer, good to see you.

>> same here.

>> republicans are expected to block the democratic plan to avert the sequest we are the filibuster we're told and while the republican plan may get a few democratic votes, that's also expected to fail. absolutely any chance at this point we avoid the sequester tomorrow?

>> well, if people will listen to our chaplain and stop this self-afflicted wound and allow these votes to go forward without a filibuster, we will have a clear majority for the democratic plan which would avert the sequester entirely and, you know what? its biggest future is putting in place the buffett rule so when you earn your second million dollars, you have to pay the same effective tax rate as your secretary. and then we won't have to lay off people. and we won't have to hurt the economic recovery. we won't have to fire firefighters and teachers and nurses.

>> yeah.

>> and close down some of our air traffic control towers. this is a self-inflicted wound.

>> senator --

>> it is definitely taking on this president again. the republicans don't understand that the election is over. they call it his idea when, in fact, they voted for it and as a matter of fact john boehner , their leader, said i'm getting 98% of what i want with this sequester.

>> senator, you've been under that capital dome for a lot of years now.

>> yes.

>> you know how the game is played. do you think that there's a chance that your colleagues are going to vote for either one of the bills and think nine hours and 42 minutes it's going to happen?

>> here's the deal. if there was no filibuster, we would avert the sequester. we are going to get more than 50 votes in the senate for our plan which puts in place the buffett rule and gives us enough revenue coming in to avoid the sequester. we do a few cuts agreed to to big agriculture and we put some cuts in defense, off in to the future. we have a plan to avert the sequester. they will filibuster that plan, requiring 60 votes. their plan keeps it in place. and gives bureaucrats the ability to decide where to make the cuts. but i have to tell you. let's just step back from this and take a deep breath. is this the time when we want to see 750,000 people lose their jobs? just this year. just coming out of the worst recession since the great depression. clearly, this was put in place so that we would come together on a long-term plan. and that's what ought to happen. so my hope is that tomorrow when the president sits down with the leaders from both sides of the aisle, they'll come to their senses, the republicans will, understand he is our president and let's not hurt the president. let's not hurt the country. let's come together on a long-range plan.

>> senator barbara boxer of california, thank you.

>> thanks.

Senate Democrats' bill light on deficit cuts in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) ? White House-backed legislation in the Senate to replace $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts would raise the deficit through the end of the budget year by tens of billions of dollars, officials said late Wednesday as the two parties maneuvered for public support on economic issues.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said that under the Democratic measure, deficits also would rise in each of the next two years before turning downward.

Democratic officials had said earlier in the day their bill would spread one year's worth of anticipated savings ? $85 billion ? over a decade in an attempt to avoid damaging the shaky economic recovery.

The legislation would cancel across-the-board cuts due to begin on Friday. Instead, it would eliminate payments to some farmers, enact defense reductions beginning in two years and impose tax increases, mostly on millionaires.

White House spokesman Jay Carney recently told reporters at the White House the administration supports the measure.

The Senate is expected to vote on Thursday on rival Democratic and Republican plans to replace the spending cuts, known in Washington-speak as a "sequester." Both bills are expected to fail.

In an indication that across-the-board cuts are inevitable, President Barack Obama has set a meeting with congressional leaders for the day they take effect. While the administration has warned of severe cuts in government services as a result of the reductions, few, if any, are likely to be felt for several weeks.

That could give the administration and lawmakers breathing room to negotiate a replacement, although Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said during the day there were limits to what could be negotiated.

"We can either secure those reductions more intelligently, or we can do it the president's way with across-the board cuts. But one thing Americans simply will not accept is another tax increase to replace spending reductions we already agreed to," he said.

Democrats said their proposal to replace across-the-board cuts was designed with the economy in mind.

It "seeks the same amount of savings in a more responsible way" as the $85 billion in cuts that will otherwise take effect, said Adam Jentleson, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"The impact on the economy is much better. Sequestration as constituted would hurt economic growth and destroy jobs," he added.

Over a decade, the bill would cut deficits by an estimated $110 billion, half from higher taxes and half from the defense and farm program cuts.

That is in keeping with Obama's call for a balanced approach that combines selected spending cuts with closing tax loopholes.

Senate Democrats have been reluctant to spell out the details of their measure, although it is not clear if that results from its relatively small impact on the deficits through the end of the current budget year.

Across the Capitol, though, the party's leaders have talked openly of their desire to spread the cuts in their replacement measure over a longer period.

"It is entirely intentional," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and the party's senior member on the House Budget Committee. "The whole idea is to achieve the equivalent deficit reduction without hurting jobs and having disruption in the economy. You do that by having targeted cuts and eliminating tax loopholes over a longer period of time," he added.

He said the Democrats' approach is the same as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's recommendation, which is to help the recovery gain strength before beginning to make cuts.

In the Senate, Republicans have yet to disclose their own sequester replacement measure. Most of the rank and file favors an alternative that lets Obama adjust the cuts to minimize any impact on the public, but that approach has its critics among lawmakers who fear giving the White House that much authority.

Paint Effects For Redesigning Home Interiors | Olger Fallas Painting

Home improvement is a form of property investment, particularly if owners had the house for a long time. However, drastic home improvement projects can cost property owners a great deal of money and you may probably understand this if you own a house. However, if you are looking forward to redesigning your home interiors, you can repaint it and improve its overall appearance.

Cover of

Paint Effects (cover via Amazon)

Repainting is indeed one of the cheapest ways of redesigning a property. Drastic changes like building a new room or adding furnishings cost a lot of money. Moreover, working on these projects consumes a lot of your time. However, with repainting, all you need to do is to buy a set of paint and necessary equipment that breathe new life in your home interiors. You can even do the repainting project on your own, which ultimately saves you money.

The concept of repainting can leave an impression of being too conventional or plain. If you have the same mindset, you should know that you could do various repainting procedures and get different effects that meet your preferences. Re-invent your home interiors by considering the following paint effects and achieve the look that you want inside your house.

Distressing

Your goal in painting is to breathe new designs. New designs may also come in paint effects that make walls look slightly older. You can achieve this effect through distressing. To manage this effect, use two layers of paint with distinct shades or colours. You can start this project by applying the top coating on the base paint color and remove it to achieve a worn-like paint effect.

Gilding

Do you want to achieve a luxurious paint effect? Then gilding is the right one for you. The foundation for this effect is when you incorporate a gold finish on your chosen area. Materials that provide this gold effect include powders with metallic properties, which you can apply to get this material?s distinct luster.

Crackle glaze

Just like distressing, this paint effect allows you to have an old-looking wall finish, which provides a unique effect and elegance to your home. On this effect, use two water-based coating that have varying colours. Apply the base finish, place the crackle glaze, and then cover it with the top coat. The top coating will crack and show off the base colour.

Lacquering

This procedure is usually associated with furnishings but it will also give good effects on walls. To achieve a lacquering effect on your wall you must first apply several layers of varnish and sand the surface before applying the next layer.

Stippling

Stippling is perhaps the most popular paint effects applied on walls. You simply paint your walls the usual way using the coat that you want or glaze. Instead of waiting for the paint to dry, you immediately start using a stippling brush where you would slightly swab the surface to see the subtle grain effect.

Stamping

If you are seeking different patterns on the walls, then stamping is the right option for you. On this paint effect, you need to use rubber stamps, which can be purchased in stores, and apply painted patterns on your walls. Depending on the stores you visit, you will even find paint rollers that have different patterns, which also help you apply the patterns with ease.

Mural effect

Are you an artist and looking for a good outlet for your paintings? Why not make your wall a canvas and draw paintings that will increase its value. Not only would this be a great way to show off your personal painting projects; it also gives your living space a warm feeling.

Optical illusion effect

Also known as trompe l? oeil, this painting effect is done by using optically stimulating paintings. This method of painting creates an illusion that you are actually seeing in 3D. You can find many options online on how to apply these illusions on your interiors and meet your preferences.

Limewash

If you are not a fan of glazed and smooth finishes, you will love the lime-wash paint effect on walls. This effect will help you achieve a chalky appearance on walls, which again brings on a unique appeal in your interiors.

Antiquing

If you are a lover of antique designs and vintage appearance, you can choose antiquing to achieve the antique-like effect on walls. There are actually paints available out there, that can artificially promote aging on the finish. This adds elegance on walls and brings a great deal of design value.
