Italy appeals court clears Knox of murder (AP)

PERUGIA, Italy ? An Italian appeals court threw out Amanda Knox's murder conviction Monday and ordered the young American freed after nearly four years in prison for the death of her British roommate.

Knox collapsed in tears after the verdict overturning her 2009 conviction was read out. Her co-defendant, Italian Raffaele Sollecito, also was cleared of killing 21-year-old Meredith Kercher in 2007.

The Kercher family looked on grimly and a bit dazed as the verdict was read out by the judge after 11 hours of deliberations by the eight-member jury. Outside the courthouse, some of the hundreds of observers shouted "Shame, shame!"

Yet inside the frescoed courtroom, Knox's parents, who have regularly traveled from their home in Seattle to Perugia to visit the 24-year-old over the past four years, hugged their lawyers and cried with joy.

"We've been waiting for this for four years," said one of Sollecito's lawyers, Giulia Bongiorno.

The judge upheld Knox's conviction on a charge of slander for accusing bar owner Diya "Patrick" Lumumba of carrying out the killing. He set the sentence at three years, meaning for time served. Knox has been in prison since Nov. 6, 2007.

Prosecutors can appeal the acquittal to Italy's highest court. There was no word late Monday if they planned to do so.

In Seattle, about a dozen Knox supporters were overjoyed that she has been cleared of the murder conviction.

"She's free!" and "We did it!" they shouted at a hotel where they watched the court proceedings on TV.

Earlier Monday, Knox tearfully told the court she did not kill her roommate. Knox frequently paused for breath and fought back tears as she spoke in Italian to the eight members of the jury in a packed courtroom, but managed to maintain her composure during the 10-minute address.

"I've lost a friend in the worst, most brutal, most inexplicable way possible," she said of the 2007 murder of Kercher, who shared an apartment with Knox when they were both students in Perugia. "I'm paying with my life for things that I didn't do."

Knox and Sollecito, Knox's former boyfriend from Italy, were convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher, who was stabbed to death in her bedroom. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. They both deny wrongdoing.

"I never hurt anyone, never in my life," Sollecito said Monday in his own speech to the jury.

Hundreds of eager observers gathered outside the courthouse ahead of the highly anticipated announcement, joining television vans that have been camped out for more than a week. One hundred reporters were being allowed into the subterranean courtroom.

Observers lined the street leading to the courthouse, taking pictures as the two vans carrying Knox and Sollecito from the prison to the court passed by.

Kercher's mother, sister and a brother traveled to Perugia for the verdict. They had expressed worry over the possibility of an acquittal but told reporters as deliberations were under way that they hoped the jury would do the right thing and not be influenced by the media's focus on the case.

"As long as they decide today based purely on the information available to them and they don't look into the media hype, I think justice will be found," the victim's sister, Stephanie Kercher, told reporters. She said the family was satisfied with the original verdicts.

She lamented that Meredith had been "most forgotten" in the media circus surrounding the case, with news photos more frequently showing Knox and Sollecito than "Mez" ? the victim's nickname. "It's very difficult to keep her memory alive in all of this," she said.

The family, however, said it could understand the Knox family's media campaign.

"They fully believe in her innocence. You can't blame them for that," said Lyle Kercher, the victim's brother. "But it's obviously hard for us."

As the verdict was broadcast live, hundreds of reporters and camera crews filled the underground, frescoed courtroom before Knox's address, while police outside cordoned off the entrance to the tribunal.

The trial has captivated audiences worldwide: Knox and Sollecito had been convicted of murdering Meredith in what the lower court said had begun as a drug-fueled sexual assault.

Knox insisted Monday that she had nothing to do with the murder and that Kercher was a friend who was always nice to her. Gesticulating, at times clasping her hands together, the American said she has always wanted justice for Kercher.

"She had her bedroom next to mine, she was killed in our own apartment. If I had been there that night, I would be dead," Knox said. "But I was not there."

"I did not kill. I did not rape. I did not steal. I wasn't there," Knox said.

After the morning court session, Knox was relaxing in the prison chapel, playing guitar and singing as she awaited the verdict, according to an Italian lawmaker who visited her in prison Monday.

"These are obviously the most difficult hours," Rocco Girlanda, who has spearheaded a campaign in Italy in support of Knox, told The Associated Press. "The time never seems to pass."

Also convicted in separate proceedings was Rudy Hermann Guede, a small-time drug dealer and drifter who spent most of his life in Italy after arriving here from his native Ivory Coast. Guede was convicted in a separate fast-track procedure and saw his sentence cut to 16 years in his final appeal.

Lawyers for Knox and Sollecito believe Guede was the sole killer, but the prosecution and a lawyer for the Kercher family say that bruises and a lack of defensive wounds on Kercher's body prove that there was more than one aggressor holding her into submission.

Knox said she had nothing more than a passing acquaintance with Guede, who played basketball at a court near the house, and didn't even know his name. Sollecito, who addressed the court before Knox, told jurors that he did not know Guede at all.

Sollecito was anxious as he addressed the court, shifting as he spoke and stopping to sip water. He said prior to the Nov. 1, 2007 murder was a happy time for him, he was close to defending his thesis to graduate from university and had just met Knox.

The weekend Kercher was murdered was the first the pair planned to spend together "in tenderness and cuddles," he said.

At the end of his 17-minute address, Sollecito took off a white rubber bracelet emblazoned with "Free Amanda and Raffaele" that he said he has been wearing for four years.

"I have never taken it off. Many emotions are concentrated in this bracelet," he said. "Now I want to pay homage to the court. The moment to take it off has arrived."

Asia reels from floods as storm whacks Vietnam (AP)

HANOI, Vietnam ? A tropical storm whacked into Vietnam on Friday, forcing 20,000 people to be evacuated, as the Philippines braced for a new typhoon and several Asian countries reeled under floods after some of the wildest weather this summer.

Prolonged monsoon flooding, typhoons and storms have wreaked untold havoc in the region, leaving more than 600 people dead or missing in India, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, China, Pakistan and Vietnam in the last four months. In India alone, the damage is estimated to be worth $1 billion, with the worst-hit state of Orissa accounting for $726 million.

Several studies suggest an intensification of the Asian summer monsoon rainfall with increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, the state-run Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology said. Still, it is not clear that this is entirely because of climate change, especially in India, it said.

After pummeling the Philippines and China this week, Typhoon Nesat was downgraded to a tropical storm just before churning into northern Vietnam on Friday afternoon with sustained wind speeds of up to 73 mph (118 kph), according to the national weather forecasting center.

Heavy rains were reported in northern and central areas. Warnings were issued for flash floods and landslides in mountainous regions, and for flooding in low-lying areas. High winds whipped through the streets of the capital, Hanoi.

The storm had flooded streets across the southern Chinese island of Hainan on Thursday, forcing some 300,000 people to flee their homes, China's official Xinhua News Agency said.

On Tuesday, Nesat bashed the Philippines, killing at least 43 people and leaving 30 others missing after causing one of the worst floods in decades in the capital, Manila.

The damage was estimated at $91 million, and preparations were already under way for Typhoon Nalgae, which was headed toward the northern Philippines. It's expected to pack winds of 87 mph (140 kph) and gusts of 105 mph (170 kph), gaining more strength before making landfall early Saturday and dumping heavy rains, forecasters said.

"The ground is still supersaturated and it cannot absorb more water," said Graciano Yumul, the Philippines' weather bureau chief. "This will just flow down to rivers and towns, and there is a big possibility that landslides, flash flooding and flooding could occur."

At least four towns in the rice-growing province of Bulacan, north of Manila, remained submerged two days after Typhoon Nesat had moved on.

Thousands sought shelter on rooftops with no food, water and electricity, while a procession of other residents waded in chest-deep water down main roads to reach dry land.

"We have nowhere to go," Celenia Espino of Calumpit township said from her home, which was filled with knee-deep murky water. "We have no means of transportation out of here."

Disaster officials in Vietnam said fish and shrimp farmers were moved to safe areas along the northern coast. Some 4,000 people, mostly the elderly, women and children, were also evacuated in three coastal districts in Nam Dinh province, said disaster official Tran Xuan Ngoc.

The storm comes on top of seasonal flooding in Vietnam's southern Mekong Delta, where eight people were killed in four provinces this week, according to the national floods and storms control department. In addition, a woman and her grandchild were killed Thursday when their home was buried by a landslide in the northern province of Yen Bai, it said.

Other parts of Asia have not been spared either.

Two typhoons hit Japan this month, leaving at least 106 people dead or missing.

In Thailand, the disaster department said 188 people have been killed and three others remain missing after a series of tropical storms hit the country since late July. Nearly 2 million people have been affected by floods and mudslides, and 122 roads are impassable.

Heavy rains in Chiang Mai, Thailand's second-biggest city, caused the Ping River to burst its banks and flooded the railway station, forcing a temporary shutdown in train service to northern Thailand. Meanwhile, 122 highways and roads nationwide are impassable.

More rainfall was forecast in northern Thailand for the weekend.

In the east Indian state of Orissa, monsoon flooding following severe drought earlier this year has killed at least 81 people since August, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. The state is asking for about $726 million in federal funds to help cope with the destruction.

India's government says 18 million people have been affected by floods in northern Uttar Pradesh state, where 168 people have been killed since June and the damage is estimated to be worth $285 million. Flooding has also hit the eastern states of Bihar and West Bengal, and Assam in the northeast.

In Pakistan, monsoon rains since early August have flooded large parts of southern Sindh province, which is still recovering from extreme flooding from a year ago. The government says 7 million people have been affected.

Ateneo Digital Brings Multilingual Digital Publishing to Latin America

Ateneo Digital logoAteneo Digital was one of three Montreal startups that was accepted to the Start-Up Chile incubator. So I thought it would be interesting to interview one of the founders, Miguel Angel Molina, about the company and why they?re making the move.

To-date we?ve had a few perspectives on Start-Up Chile including Naysawn Naderi?s take on why he?s going to Chile with his startup Art Sumo, and Ken Seville?s thoughts on the challenges he?s had as a participating startup (his company is CiviSide) in the program already.

So on to Ateneo Digital and Miguel Angel Molina?

NextMontreal: What is Ateneo Digital and when was it started?

Miguel: We?re working to become an online publisher and distributor that uses digital publishing technology to facilitate access to specialized academic and professional content. We?re going to be providing content via an online web browsing system and offline via the sale of mainly ePUB, Mobi, and PDF files, and enhanced file formats too (more rich media oriented). The idea is to get specialized content originating throughout the Americas and make it available worldwide in a creative, simple, user-friendly and engaging way. Ateneo started taking shape in my head somewhere around January, but Olivers and I teamed up in late February and started working together on it officially in March of this year (2011).

NextMontreal: Who are the founders and what are your backgrounds?

Miguel: Just Olivers and myself. We?ve known each other for years, since 1996, when I lived in Venezuela.

Olivers has the technical skills, covering telecommunications systems, web and app development, e-commerce development, and programming. His background?s quite interesting: among the first Web designers in Venezuela in 1996, he?s designed and implemented telecommunications infrastructure across the country for big-name mobile operators, and since 2010 is running his own technology venture offering web and app development, technology services, and consulting support for corporate clients in Venezuela. Olivers also has serious hardware and software expertise, making him a pretty balanced technology professional. He happens to be an electronics engineer from Venezuela?s Universidad Sim?n Bol?var, the country?s main technology school. One more thing about him (yes, it?s sounding like an Ode, but believe me, this one is very important) is that he?s creative and resilient, always finding solutions to problems in challenging landscapes. Venezuela is a VERY difficult country to operate out of. Resilience is KING.

On my end, the background is mainly on international management, strategic planning, and commercial development skills covering Lean practices, marketing, supplier/partner negotiations, and transportation and logistics engineering. These days, until we head to Chile I guess, I?m doing management consulting in these areas. I graduated Summa cum Laude from Delaware State University, earned my Master of Science in Transportation degree at MIT, and later worked in international business and management with some big names like Lufthansa and IATA (hence my connection to Montreal; IATA?s base). My work right now, along with Ateneo, is consulting, helping transportation, media and entertainment companies. I speak several languages too.

NextMontreal: Why did you start Ateneo Digital? What market opportunity did you see?

Miguel: We started Ateneo Digital out of need. In Venezuela, as across all Latin America, there?s a huge need for quality academic and professional knowledge. People there struggle all the time seeking the books/magazines/articles they want and need. It?s easier with the Internet and global supply chains these days, but you can?t compare it with life in North America and Western Europe. We see an opportunity here, and a huge one! Digital publishing is new in the industrialized world, and non-existent in Latin America, but it?s here to stay! All kinds of benefits emerge from digital publishing and online content distribution/consumption. The opportunities are just amazing. You see, Ateneo is at the crossroads of three significant economic activities: information technologies, publishing, and education. Each has it?s unique potential. Combined, the possibilities are endless. This digital publishing and content distribution of quality content market is just getting started ? not just in Latin America, but globally.

NextMontreal: Who are the competitors?

Miguel: Even though we?re touching three major sectors (IT, Digital Publishing and Education), and competitors are coming out from all three, I?ll limit things to the Digital Publishing realm. It?s very fragmented! We?ve got some big well-known names like Google, Amazon, and Project Gutenberg. There?s also more creative operations out there like Inkling and Flat World Knowledge. You also have tons of academic publishers (MIT Press, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, etc.), the big 6 publishers, and operations like Thomson Reuters, Lexis Nexis, etc. In all these cases though, they?re mostly limited to English speaking audiences. For Latin America, or a fully-multilingual player like ourselves, there?s a different mix. It?s only a handful of dedicated Spanish-speaking operations, the bigger publishing houses, and that?s about it. You?re talking about no more than 12 to 15 strong names and all they?re doing is digitizing and selling content. Nothing else too innovative.

NextMontreal: Can you provide some examples of the type of content you will provide on Ateneo Digital?

Miguel: We?ve been working with some authors already, creating text books, research papers, and a few white papers too. We?re also contemplating things that have more rich media (audio and video, though not really our key focus right now). Keep in mind that the content doesn?t have to be presented as a single book or title. There are many ways to package content, especially in the digital domain.

NextMontreal: Do you have partnerships with universities / professors ? is that where most of the content will come from?

Miguel: We?re working on it! And, yep, there?s a lot of content from these sources ? especially independent authors affiliated to education. Latin America (and the developing world in general) is filled with self-publishing academics.

NextMontreal: You recently joined Start-Up Chile ? why? What advantages do you see of the program?

Miguel: We?re from the Americas and for the Americas, so our goal is to be in every country across the continent. We can envision a regional presence being managed from Chile. Chile doesn?t produce that many academic books (Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru all create more content ? in that order). However, you could argue that this is because the country is so small when compared to the five major players Still, the country is advancing in other areas, and that?s just as important for us! Chile?s trade relations and economic output are among the best in the region. It?s institutions and IT infrastructure are sound. It?s a business friendly place. And it?s landscapes? Olivers and I both like the outdoors, a lot. As we said in our application: along with everything else about Chile, we like Penguins. More importantly, though, no other country in the region has such an interesting entrepreneurship initiative. The $40K has lots of appeal. But the resources they?re bringing together really caught our attention, especially since they understand the unique dynamics of Latin America.

NextMontreal: Had you tried to raise capital in Canada or no? If so, what was it like?

Miguel: Gee, that?s a really good question. Unfortunately, I?m not allowed to talk much about. Sorry. Let?s talk again about this in a few months if you don?t mind.

NextMontreal: What are your expectations for Start-Up Chile?

Miguel: We have lots of things we?d like to accomplish while taking part in Start-Up Chile, though the main goal is to have full time attention for our project. It?s tough right now for us, with Olivers and I working full time and the other team members chipping in on the sides. Six months of non-stop, fully focused, resource rich, and morally supported effort would do us GREAT! We?re particularly thrilled about the moral support from the people we?ll be working with. Latin America doesn?t have many entrepreneur-friendly environments. It?s so not like Montreal. Half the time you?re having to explain to people why you are taking this ?crazy? path of starting something from scratch and with little or no resources. Having lived in Montreal, and having team members from Montreal, I know first hand how different it can be! We?re seriously contemplating a full relocation to Montreal at some point, because the atmosphere is just great. But having found (and been accepted to) an environment that?s just as promising, and especially designed by people that understand our primary market/audience is amazing. Just remember, more than expectations about the program, it?s our motivation to take full advantage of what it offers.

NextMontreal: When the program is finished, will you be coming back to Montreal?

Miguel: Half the team is in Canada already (though somewhat in-between Toronto and Montreal right now ? but that?s temporary). If I can convince Olivers to put up with the -30C, we?ll definitely establish ourselves with a stronger presence there. Montreal is among the best places in North America, and the French speaking community is also very important to us. Multi-cultural dialogue across the Americas, without the French-speaking community would be incomplete! So, in short, we intend on having Ateneo in Montreal again at some point ? and I hope that it?s soon.

NextMontreal: When are you launching?

Miguel: We?re looking at sometime around the first quarter of 2012, no later than early March. We?ve progressed a lot in these first 6 months of existence, and we don?t anticipate any pivots to our efforts really, just a few adjustments here and there. But you never know. You plan life at your desk, and then go outside and just live it!

Seven Syrian troops die as armed resistance emerges (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Syria said on Friday that seven of its soldiers and police were killed in an operation against terrorists in the central town of Rastan, where armed resistance has emerged after months of mostly peaceful protests against President Bashar al-Assad.

The state news agency reported the deaths in the first official comment on a three-day government offensive to recapture the area from army defectors.

"The units responsible have inflicted big losses on the armed terrorist groups," the agency said, quoting a military spokesman. "The confrontation resulted in the killing of seven personnel, among them two officers, and the injuring of 32, including seven officers, from the army and security police."

Syria's army and security forces have remained mostly loyal to Assad during the six months of protests demanding his overthrow in which the United Nations says 2,700 people have been killed.

But army deserters, many of whom defected because they refused to shoot at demonstrators, have formed rebel units mostly in farming areas around Rastan, a town of 40,000 people which lies 180 km (110 miles), north of Damascus.

One army defector operating in the province of Idlib, northwest of Rastan, said the defectors in the town were using guerrilla tactics against the heavily-armed loyalist forces.

"Rastan has been churning out army officers for decades and there is a lot of experience among the defecting soldiers. Assad is mistaken if he thinks that he can wrap up the attack quickly," he said, adding that agricultural terrain made it difficult for the regular army to seal off the area.

The Rastan area is a recruiting ground for Sunni conscripts who provide most of manpower in the military, which is dominated by officers from Assad's minority Alawite sect.

Residents say that at least 1,000 deserters and armed villagers have been fighting the loyalist forces which are backed up by tanks and helicopters.

Syria says more than 700 soldiers and police have been killed in the uprising which it blames on armed groups backed by foreign powers.

In Rastan, troops and security police "were continuing to chase members of these terrorist groups to restore security and stability to Rastan and its citizens", the news agency said.

STONES AND TOMATOES

On Thursday, Assad supporters threw stones and tomatoes at U.S. ambassador Robert Ford's convoy as he visited an opposition figure in Damascus.

Ford and his party were uninjured, the U.S. State Department said, but several embassy vehicles were damaged and the ambassador had to lock himself in an office to await help from Syrian security.

Syria, which has been irked by Ford's meetings with opposition figures, accused Washington of inciting violence and meddling in its affairs. Washington demanded that Syria take steps to protect U.S. diplomats.

"We condemn this unwarranted attack in the strongest possible terms. Ambassador Ford and his aides were conducting normal embassy business and this attempt to intimidate our diplomats through violence is wholly unjustified," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

"We immediately raised this incident with the Syrian government and we are demanding that they take every possible step to protect our diplomats according to their obligations under international law."

The Syrian government said that once it had been alerted to the confrontation, authorities "took all necessary procedures to protect the ambassador and his team and secure their return to their place of work".

Assad's crackdown on the pro-democracy protests has poisoned relations with the United States, which has imposed fresh sanctions and rallied world pressure on Syria.

ONE-MAN RULE

The U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams said the era of one-man rule in Arab countries was drawing to a close, and the change sweeping the region would soon take hold in Syria.

"Syria is in the midst of a profound crisis. I do believe strongly that there will be substantial change," Williams told Reuters. "When that will take place it is very difficult to ascertain but I don't think we are talking about years."

At the United Nations, European members of the Security Council softened a draft resolution condemning Syria's crackdown but Russia said it could not support the new text.

The latest version of the resolution showed that drafters Britain, France, Germany and Portugal had deleted a reference to U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay's recommendation that the council consider referring the Syrian government's crackdown to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The United States is expected to support it, envoys said, despite its disappointment about compromises made in an attempt to woo Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa.
