Sure, Soup Is Good Food, But Will It Ever Be Hip? -- Grub Street ...

Mmm, mmm good

Mmm, mmm goodPhoto: Campbell's Soup Company

Following its efforts to tap into young America?s ?restless spirits? and ?adventurous tastes? with the rollout of food-truck-inspired soups, the marketing department at Campbell?s Soup Company is upping the hipster ante again this weekend with a new line of its stock-in-trade that?s packaged to look like Andy Warhol?s iconic pop-art masterwork. According to the Business Journal, the limited edition ? well, 1.2 million were made, so don't expect hand-numbering on the cans ? coincides with the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of Warhol's most famous pieces. It?s also the second of a dozen product launches that the soup-maker has lined up to help boost its sagging sales. They go on sale Sunday at Target locations all over the U.S.

Clever? Absolutely! But will the ploy actually work? In the short term, most likely. Die-hards, collectors, and those looking to turn a quick buck on eBay will surely gobble up the cans. In a broader sense though, it?s doubtful. America?s young and hip, especially those with an affinity for Warhol?s now seemingly quaint work, are most likely too sophisticated and equally skeptical to get caught up in such a blatant marketing scheme. And surely those restless spirits don?t shop at Target. Nice try, though.

Modern China: A tale of luxury villas and displaced villagers

As uniformed maids bustled about the yard of the villa, Zhu Xinxin ushered a guest across black and tan Italian marble floors to an elevator that rose with a hushed glide. In the master bathroom upstairs, Zhu paused to point out gold-plated swan sink faucets that cost $7,865 each.

With an inviting smile, Zhu, wearing a black suit and lavender blouse, led her visitor downstairs. There, she described the finer details of the walk-in cigar cabinet, home theater and tiled swimming pool decorated with a Roman-style relief of horses and chariot that bulged from the wall.

?The villa is like a castle,? said Zhu, a 23-year-old who works full time as the main attendant of the house.

The price of the home has been advertised at more than $47 million, one of 12 properties for sale at that amount at an opulent cloister in Beijing?s eastern suburbs. If they sell close to that sum, they?ll be among the most expensive real estate in the capital, the piece de resistance of a collection of 208 houses on a lush 82-acre estate.

The development, known in English as ThaiHot Mansion and Courtyards by the Canal, would stand out in most places. In China, it?s astounding. The cheapest of the 50 or so properties that are still available is on the market for more than $4.7 million, according to management. Last year, the per capita annual net income of the nation?s rural residents was about $1,100, by official figures. The per capita disposable income for urban dwellers was some $3,430.

The billowing crystal chandelier above the living room of Zhu?s villa cost roughly $23,500.

Faced with such signs of a deepening wealth gap, the Chinese Communist Party has repeatedly indicated the need for change. Economic inequalities in China stoke the impression among many here of an upper class bordering on lords and princes, either made affluent by proximity to the party or now beholden to its power.

The imbalance extends to the rule of law. For instance, former residents of Puxin Village, much of which was razed for ThaiHot Mansion, say that some who refused to move were beaten. People who?ve since tried applying to government offices for redress, they said, have been detained and harassed.

Perhaps informed by that sort of dynamic, a driving refrain of President Hu Jintao?s administration has been the call for ?harmonious society.? His premier, Wen Jiabao, is known for explicit references to dissatisfaction among the masses and the necessity of addressing the situation.

Still, there?s been no sweeping reform, and Hu and Wen will leave office soon. Their replacements are to be announced at a Communist Party congress in the coming weeks or months, in a once-in-a-decade transfer of power on the Politburo Standing Committee. As is party practice, the specific date hasn?t been made public.

That will leave to the next set of leaders a nation whose rise stokes fear in the West but that?s also nervous about its own domestic tensions. The official Xinhua news wire reported this month that a study published by the state Chinese Academy of Social Sciences found that the income gap between China?s urban and rural residents ? whose populations are close in size after years of city growth ? is 26 percent higher than it was in 1997 and 68 percent above the levels of 1985.

SOL Republic Says Its New Headphones Are the Best Yet, but Cannot At All Explain Why That Is [Headphones]

These are the SOL Republic Tracks Ultra. The company says these are its nicest, bestest headphones yet. But aside from the new name, the use of terms like "V12 Sound Engines," and a more expensive $180 price tag, there's no quantitative, or even qualitative, explanation as to why these are the company's new pride and joy. Fake coyotes used to scare geese at Mich. beach

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) ? A Michigan community that's fed up with geese fouling up a beach is hoping fake coyotes encourage the birds to land elsewhere.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell and WHMI-FM report that the beach on Thompson Lake at Howell City Park is expected to be closed for the rest of the summer swimming season because of elevated E. coli levels. The beach was shut down this month and goose poop is blamed.

Debbie Mikula is director of the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority. She says the fake coyotes have shown some success in keeping the birds away. They're being moved at night to trick the geese into thinking they're real.

The hope is that the beach about 45 miles northwest of Detroit will reopen next year.

Review: Sound Shapes (PSV) - Better Gaming Bureau

Sound Shapes is the latest game from Queasy Games and at first I wasn?t sure if this was a game that was more about music or platforming. Turns out, Sound Shapes is a combination of both which looks and sounds great. What is Sound Shapes exactly you might ask? It?s pretty simple really, if you love platformers then you will love this game because it is a pure platformer, but its very soothing and peaceful as well and it?s not hard like a Super Meat Boy or Limbo. Sound Shapes features the music of Beck, Deadmau5 and Jim Guthrie of Superbrothers Sword and Sorcery fame. There are around 4 worlds which are selectable by picking which album you want to play whether it be the Beck album, Deadmau5 album, you can select which world you want to delve into first and you play as a micro-organism jumping and sticking to certain surfaces to progress through a level while dropping some funky beats.

Graphically, Sound Shapes has a similar feel to the PixelJunk Shooter games and it looks awesome. Many of the levels that you will play have their own distinct feel and look to them that make them all very unique and creative. The color scheme is very simple but it?s very effective and very easy on the eyes indeed. Sound Shapes definitely has an indie feel to it all the way through and even the little organism you play as looks really cool as well.

Gameplay in Sound Shapes is simple, it has your platform elements such as jumping, sticking on surfaces to get to the next area of the level and there are quite a few puzzles thrown in as well but they are very easy and fun and none of it feels like it?s forced into the game. There is a campaign mode in which you will spend at least 3 hours on but there are some really cool levels that I did like a lot such as the Jim Guthrie level in which everything is black and white and it looks very similar to Swords and Sorcery EP and it has some great puzzles in it as well. The other worlds are really fun to look at and play as well ranging from a cold, winter setting level to a homage to retro games, each world you play in has a great level design of it?s own and at first the game will be ridiculously easy but it will be a little challenging during the later levels but nothing that?s hard. That is not the goal in Sound Shapes. There is a more challenging difficulty that is unlocked after you beat the campaign mode but to me Sound Shapes is all about the smooth controls, easy to pick up gameplay and hard to put down because the game feels so rewarding to you as you finish each album(world) because you can?t wait to see what is next. Also if you choose to put the time into it, you can create your own levels and you can put in different objects in the level that will trigger different sounds and music and when it is all put together, it really feels nice and gratifying.

The most important part of Sound Shapes is of course the soundtrack that is comprised of Beck, Jim Guthrie, Deadmau5, I am Robot, Proud and other talented artists as well. Sound is a very integral part of Sounds Shapes because music is the driving force behind the gameplay, it?s not just there thrown into the background but the music dictates each world and level and it is great to see so much creativity and fluidness in the game. Each world has its? own music (for example the ?world? Cities is all music from Beck) and this is what makes Sound Shapes the game it is. From the simple beat of a drum to the more complex electronic, bass and dance music, there?s something here for everyone.

I was quite surprised with Sound Shapes because I was not sure of what to expect but in a way that is kinda good because it makes your experience in Sound Shapes even better if you don?t clearly know what to expect but nonetheless Sound Shapes is a great game that will please your eyes and ears as well as your imagination. The abstract feel to the game is perfect and very colorful and combine that with very tight platforming controls and fun, peaceful gameplay and you have a real winner here that is only $15 ($12 for PS Plus members) and you also get the PS3 and PS Vita versions as well. I am very glad to see this on PSN and this is easily the best game from Sony?s PSN Play promo.

Method to simplify production of proteins used in many types of drugs developed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Engineering researchers at the University of Arkansas have developed a method to simplify the pharmaceutical production of proteins used in drugs that treat a variety of diseases and health conditions, including diabetes, cancer, arthritis and macular degeneration.

With assistance from the National Science Foundation Innovation Corps program, Ellen Brune, the primary researcher and inventor of the technology, has started a company to shorten development time so that new drugs can get to patients faster. Current protein pharmaceutical development is a complicated, time-consuming and expensive process because manufacturers must separate and extract contaminant proteins.

Brune, a doctoral student in chemical engineering, created a series of custom strains of the bacteria Escherichia coli that express minimized sets of contaminants or "nuisance" proteins. Brune then sought assistance to commercialize the technology. In an entrepreneurship class taught by Carol Reeves, associate vice provost for entrepreneurship and management professor in the Sam M. Walton College of Business, Brune created Boston Mountain Biotech LLC, a research and biotechnology firm that will save significant time by preparing the proteins for the manufacturing process.

"Millions of people across the globe are suffering from treatable diseases because manufacturers cannot afford to make the drugs they need," Brune said. "These companies have to spend too much time and money getting rid of stuff that doesn't work to get to the stuff that does. Our work addresses this problem. Our cell lines reduce the garbage, so to speak, before the manufacturing process begins."

Current protein pharmaceutical manufacturing involves separating or cleaning up "background" contamination to reach the target protein -- a long and expensive process. Background contamination is undesirable and unnecessary proteins that are prohibited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the final drug product. The FDA requires that the final product be 99 percent pure.

Drug companies spend roughly $8 billion a year trying to clean up these contaminants during production. Brune compares the process to making orange juice by blending the peel and seeds along with the meat of an orange. Once the juice is made, producers would then have to filter out the chunks of seeds and peel.

In the laboratory, Brune worked under the direction of chemical engineering professor Bob Beitle, one of several researchers who have been investigating this problem for more than a decade. Brune designed custom strains of "Lotus" E. coli. Lotus refers to a suite of cell lines optimized to work with specific separation techniques and characteristics. She accomplished this through bio-separation and genetic manipulation, specifically by removing the sections of DNA that code for the contaminant regions. Her work simplifies the purification process on the front end of protein pharmaceutical production, so that the cell line is specifically developed for manufacturing. Current cell lines used for protein production look nothing like what has to be achieved for large-scale manufacturing, Brune said.

Slow Cooker Salsa Chicken

Clean Eating recipe from He and She Eat Clean

{Full recipe from HSEC here}

This recipe is intended to be made once a week and should make 5 lunches for 2 people. So far, so true.?

Ingredients:
5-7 Chicken Breasts, Organic, Preservative Free, Perfect Chicks
1 can Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes, with juice
1.5 Cups Salsa {we had a yummy chipotle one on hand}
2 TB Powdered Garlic
2 TB Red Pepper Flakes {eek! this was a LOT!}
1 Tb Black Pepper
1 tsp Cayenne Pepper

What To Do:
1. Put it allllll in the crock pot; make sure the chicken is covered with liquid
2. Slow cook for 7 hours on low {or 3.5 on high}
3. Shred the chicken while it is still in the pot
4. Spread between 10 to-go containers

This was easily the most simple recipe that I prepped last night. We were tight for time, so I set it on high for 3.5 hours while we worked out and prepped the other food.?

Review:
By Josh: Amazing! Loved the level of spiciness and didn't even have to add any additional hot sauce or sriracha. Very tender chicken, tasted nice against the quinoa and black beans that we paired with it. Would like to have it rolled up in a whole wheat tortilla or with some chips nacho-style.?
By Amanda: Holy SPICY! I like the level of moisture left in the dish and the shredded style of the chicken was nice. But this dish was just way too spicy for me...I added my quinoa and black beans into it but it didn't help much. My mouth was on fire! The flavor was nice though and it pushed me to drink a bunch of water! I agree with Josh that a tortilla or chips would be a nice addition, really anything to tone down that heat would be nice. :) Next time...half of the red pepper flakes the recipe calls for ;)

Nutrition Stats:

Look at all of that protein! We paired our chicken with a super simple quinoa dish- quinoa, minced garlic and a can of drained and rinsed black beans- this made it more filling and a more complete dish.?

Bam! Spicy!

Belgian pedophile accomplice gets early release

Judge Albert Fettweis, centre, presides over a hearing for Michelle Martin at the Court of Cassation at the Justice Palace in Brussels on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. The highest court is considering whether to grant conditional early release to one of the nation's most despised criminals even though the accomplice and former wife of a pedophile and child killer let two of his victims starve to death. The Court of Cassation said Tuesday it can only rule on procedural issues in the decision by a lower court to allow Michelle Martin to go live in a convent after serving barely half of her 30-year sentence for her part in the mid-1990s kidnappings, rapes and killings of Marc Dutroux. (AP) ? Belgium's highest court on Tuesday granted conditional early release to one of the nation's most despised criminals, the accomplice and former wife of a pedophile and child killer, even though she let two of his victims starve to death.

The Court of Cassation ruled that no procedural errors were made by a lower court to allow Michelle Martin to live in a convent after serving barely half of her 30-year sentence for her part in the mid-1990s kidnappings, rapes and killings by her then-husband, Marc Dutroux.

"The court rejects the appeals," a statement said after the panel assessed ones filed by the prosecutor's offices and some of the families of the victims.

It was unclear when Martin would be traveling to southern Malonne, where she will live in a Clarisse convent and, in the words of her lawyer, seek atonement for her crimes.

Republicans nominate Romney as presidential candidate

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Republicans formally nominated Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate on Tuesday to face Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

By voice vote in a raucous arena, delegates to the Republican National Convention united behind the former Massachusetts governor, who this year outlasted a series of conservative challengers to come out on top.

Romney, 65, is in a close fight with Obama with 70 days to go until the election and Republicans hope he will gain some much-needed momentum from the Tampa convention this week.

(AP) ? Lawyers for Ukraine's jailed opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, appealed to Europe's human rights court Tuesday as her only hope for a fair hearing, accusing the government of rigging the criminal case against her. A lawyer for the government denied any political motive and said her complaints about prison conditions and injuries were groundless.

An architect of Ukraine's 2004 Orange Revolution, Tymoshenko has been jailed since her arrest in a courtroom in August 2011, accused of negotiating a corrupt gas deal with Russia when she was prime minister. Supporters of the charismatic leader famed for her golden braids say she was jailed as the most potent threat to her political archrival, President Viktor Yanukovich.

Tuesday's testimony covered both the mundane questions of prison cell windows and cold running water, and the significant issues of inmate privacy, abuse and political retribution. Since the initial charges, the government has continued to build allegations against Tymoshenko: She went on trial in June on charges of evading several million dollars in taxes 15 years ago, and is the subject of a slew of other criminal investigations, including a murder case.

In April, Tymoshenko went on a hunger strike in jail, accusing prison guards of punching her in the stomach and twisting her limbs.

Since then, Western concern over her arrest has grown, and European leaders boycotted Euro 2012 soccer matches this summer to protest her detention.

"All this process has been prearranged and prewritten by the regime," said Tymoshenko's daughter, Eugenia, who attended Tuesday's hearing.

On Wednesday, Ukraine's highest court is scheduled to rule on her detention; previous rulings have consistently upheld the government, and Eugenia Tymoshenko said she held out little hope that the next decision would be different.

The government's lawyer, Nazar Kulchitsky, denied Yulia Tymoshenko had been mistreated in prison, saying an inquiry determined that the prominent bruises were either self-inflicted or simply the manifestation of an earlier illness. When pressed by a judge, he could not explain how Tymoshenko could have bruised herself. Kulchitsky said Tymoshenko repeatedly refused medical treatment while in detention.

He acknowledged that she had been under video surveillance in violation of her privacy, but said there were no recordings of her. He offered little explanation for why Tymoshenko's cellmate was taken away just before the time when the former prime minister said she was attacked by the guards, except to say that she was supposed to undergo a medical check.

After the hearing, Kulchitsky questioned the former prime minister's allegations that the case against her was political.

"The fact that Tymoshenko was a political figure is not enough to say that she was a victim of political repression," he said.

He also denied that Tymoshenko was arrested because she acted disrespectfully to the court: "The only grounds for her arrest was that she was trying to hide the truth."

Tymoshenko's lawyer, Sergei Vlasenko, said the case against the former prime minister was rigged and called on the panel of judges in the European Court of Human Rights to rule for her. Ukraine, a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights, could face penalties if it loses the case.

"There is no fair judiciary in Ukraine at all , and there is no fair judiciary for Mrs. Tymoshenko," he said. "She is absolutely isolated from any communication with her relatives and with the press. . She asked me to address you asking help."

Ukraine's highest court is scheduled to rule Wednesday on the gas case, and if the decision goes against Tymoshenko as her lawyers expect, she will be able to appeal again to the European court, said Roman Kuybida, an analyst with the Kiev-based Center for Political and Legal Reforms.

Tymoshenko's following remains strong in Ukraine, where demonstrations at the prison in support of her can grow to thousands of people crying "Freedom for Yulia!"

WATCHING THE SHOW: Are conventions still relevant?

The conventional wisdom about national political conventions is that they have outlived their purpose.

Once, they were the place where the parties actually picked their candidates for president and vice president. But for at least 30 years now, conventions have been the place where the nominees, long since selected, try to bind up their party's internal wounds and reach out over the heads of the delegates to woo the less partisan voters who usually decide the election.

They have become the largest, most expensive infomercials in human experience.

So why are we even still having them?

As the parties convene, there will be much chattering that conventions don't matter anymore, that they are a waste of money (some of it taxpayer money) and should be abandoned. "Total anachronisms. Parties should scrap 'em," sniffs Mark McKinnon, former media adviser to George W. Bush and a co-founder of No Labels, a group devoted to purging "hyper-partisanship" from politics.

The Senate, in fact, voted, 95 to 4 a few weeks ago to cut off in the future the $18.3 million subsidy each party gets to stage (that is the word ? "stage") the conventions. Homeland Security also gives out $50-milllion to assure security at each convention.

The parties are not likely to give up their moments in the sun, however.

Conventions are the time when voters really tune in. Even with the reduced air time the TV networks now give them, conventions bring a spike in attention, says Andrew Kohut , president of the Pew Research Center. Social media is likely to magnify that this year in the same way that it whetted TV audiences' appetites for this summer's other big event, the London Olympics.

The acceptance speeches of the two presidential nominees will be the largest campaign audience either receives until they meet together for the three debates.

Those speeches are no small thing.

American politics is hardly burdened by too much communication, although if you live in a battleground state saturated with 30-second commercials you might be forgiven for thinking that. The larger problem is too little substantive communication, particularly communication that forces a thought to last longer than the speed of sound-bite.

The acceptance speeches are the only time in the entire fall campaign when each candidate speaks directly to the country for an extended time, unfiltered by news coverage or back and forth with an opponent.

Other countries arrange time specifically for that sort of thing. Not in America.

"It is the best chance for a candidate to 'introduce himself' to the country on his own terms," says former Rep Mickey Edwards, a Republican from Oklahoma. That is particularly interesting coming from Edwards, who in almost every other respect excoriates the present political system in his new book, "The Parties Versus the People."

"I do, indeed, want to radically overhaul the system, but that's about the voting process, money, partisanship in governing," Edwards says. "The convention is not at that level; it's more of a 'show', more important than mere 'entertainment.' I see it as something worth watching, and even more so than most of the other stuff on television."

Indeed, it is the kind of high-school civics version of campaigning that is otherwise pretty hard to locate in the day-to-day scrum of American national politics these days.

If the candidates want to speak directly to the nation after their conventions, they have to pay for the time, as Obama did in 2008.

Of course, if the justification for public spending on party events is that the acceptance speech is a public service, the government could just spend that $18.3 million to buy air time for each campaign.

That $18.3 million is one of the last remnants of a public finance system that was meant to curb money in politics. The IRS collects $3 from every taxpayer who ticks the box for the presidential campaign fund. But most of the money, some $235 million, is sitting in the government coffers because neither Romney nor Obama is taking their share, preferring instead to go out and raise and spend even more on their own.

Since $18 million might not be enough, at going rates, to buy an hour across all the networks and key cable channels, Congress could authorize the Presidential Election Campaign Fund to tap the rest of that money, too, to buy time on the condition it was used for long-form presentations. There will be a great temptation to take this unspent money and plow it back into paying down the government debt. But it would probably increase the chances of actually dealing with that debt if the candidates used the money to explain the fiscal situation and what they planned to do about it.

The parties will have to make their own decision whether to continue the conventions without the federal subsidy. They might well, since the conventions are still a valuable tool for rewarding party workers and motivating the base voters of each party, something that could loom particularly large this year in an election that may revolve even more than usually on whose loyalists turn out in the fall (partisan voters do tend to watch their own convention more than the other guys').

Conventions weren't part of the original plan. The founders by and large hated parties (tellingly, they called them factions) and probably would have hated partisan conventions, which were invented only after they were gone.

Conventions were originally thought of as a reform of a system in which congressmen picked the candidates. The first party conventions were before the election of 1832, and nominated Henry Clay to challenge President Andrew Jackson. Delegates arrived at both those party conventions knowing who would get the nomination. Just like this year. But that hasn't stopped conventions from convening every four years since.

Even before the federal subsidy is yanked, the conventions are evolving. Once a fixture of midsummer, the Democratic convention this year will actually be after Labor Day, coinciding with the traditional kickoff of fall campaigning. The Democrats had already cut their convention to three days, recognizing a reality that broadcasters weren't going to pay attention to their activities on Labor Day anyway. The broadcasters then told the Republicans they wouldn't cover their Monday sessions either, and Hurricane Isaac has now finished the job of washing out day one.

"Despite separation between church and state, Mother Nature is helping to ensure that the conventions get trimmed from four days to three," said Elizabeth Wilner, vice president of the Kantar/media analysis group. "With Dems really only doing three days, and now Republicans only doing three days, in 2016 there will be pressure to only do three days."

Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., saw this coming. He has served as parliamentarian of the last four GOP conventions. He recalls that in 2008 a Katrina-class hurricane was barreling for the Gulf Coast as the convention convened in Minnesota. His staff got together and figured out a way to compress all the legally required business of the convention ? rules, the platform and the nomination of the ticket ? into a few hours so delegates from the Gulf Coast, including the governors of Louisiana and Mississippi, could rush home to respond to the looming disaster.

This Plan B went unneeded. The hurricane blew out, and the convention went ahead as planned over four days to nominate John McCain and Sarah Palin.

While Dreier developed a plan to effectively eliminate the Republican convention, that doesn't mean he would. "There will be a degree of uncertainty about what party conventions will look like in the future," he said as he headed to Tampa. "They are going through a bit of a change. But I don't agree they are unnecessary."

Gay Marriage, Gay Parenting, and Me | It's Conceivable

My girlfriend and I are planning to get married. We?ve been together four years.
I did not set up an elaborate proposal (Although I briefly daydreamed about a fictional concert where I would write a perfect note to Kathleen Hanna and ask her to bring me up onstage to propose).

I didn?t get down on one knee. She didn?t either. Neither she nor I bought or wants a diamond ring (I?m about as interested in diamond rings as I am in wearing fabulous skirts ? that is, not very).

All that said, we finally admitted to each other that we want a wedding for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it?s a sincere commitment to each other and an opportunity to have a really nice party. Oh, and it doesn?t hurt to secure our Wills, finances, and medical decision-making power either.

Let me be clear ? I have no problem with more traditional weddings happening for other couples. Like everybody else, I?ve gotten a little misty when I hear a co-worker or friend talk about a proposal. I?m emotionally moved at weddings during all the parts where you?re supposed to be moved ? the vows, the dances, the speeches. I don?t hate weddings at all, and I get that the drama of the wedding ritual can float a lot of people?s boats.

As a feminist and lesbian, I just never imagined myself being in one. It seems silly for me to go through motions that don?t really apply to our lives. Giving away the bride (To who? For what? Which one?). Wearing white (Queen Victoria?s fashion choices are not mine). Having a wedding party (It seems like an in-person version of what used to happen on MySpace where you could choose your Top 8 Friends to display, thereby making all of your other friends feel shitty). These things don?t make that much sense for any modern couple, but they really don?t make sense for most gay and lesbian couples, unless the theme of your wedding is ?traditional wedding? and you?re acting out those roles and rituals for a dramatic effect.

Perhaps that?s part of the reason that there has always been a bit of backlash against gay marriage within the gay community, with some arguing that gay and lesbian couples shouldn?t just be aping the traditions of straight couples, or trying to ?normalize? their relationships by copying codified rules that have traditionally rejected us. I would be on board with all of that if there weren?t the pesky little fact that marriage is tied to hundreds of of legal rights and safeguards for us as a couple, especially if we want to start a family. Plus, one could argue that exposing family and friends to public images of gay couples ? and weddings are certainly some of the best heart-tugging relationship eye candy out there ? does advance public perception of our relationships. It makes us real, it makes us human, it makes us relatable to the Chik-fil-a goers out there.

There?s no doubt the battle for same sex marriage has been a platform that?s helped bring other LGBT isssues to the stage, and advanced awareness of and understanding about same sex couples in a multitude of ways. Notably, the Democratic party has added same sex marriage to the party platform this year. That?s a HUGE deal, no matter how you feel about actually getting married. Similarly, President Obama explicitly supporting same sex marriage this year is a HUGE deal in the fight for gay rights and symbolic support (if not actual legislation). The past few years have been crazy with progress. And yet, just as LGBT couples did their own commitment ceremonies for years before Massachusetts legalized gay marriage, we?ve been starting families and raising kids all along, too.

By that I mean, the next step after marriage is kids, and a similar debate to that of gay marriage is beginning to materialize around same sex families within the gay community and in larger popular culture. Are we following in the footsteps of how straight families are formed, or are we forging new family structures that end up influencing straight couples? Is it annoying or amazing that the more visible gay families are, the more gay couples will be expected to start a family?

The New York Times recently ran a piece about a gay couple in New York who were feeling pressure to start a family, despite being vocal about the fact that they had no interest in having kids. With shows like The New Normal and Modern Family dominating primetime this fall, and the recent announcement of Jennifer Lopez-backed lesbian ABC Family show The Fosters, it?s no wonder same sex couples are starting to feel the same pressure straight couples feel after getting married. The difference, of course, is that not many people know how challenging starting a family can be for same sex couples.

My partner and I both have well-paying jobs, but we?re barely able to save for a vacation, let alone a baby. Aside from the general cost of having a child, we?ll have to start a couple hundy in the hole compared to a straight couple, with the gap widening the longer it takes for us to get pregnant. We can expect to pay about $200-400 for each IUI appointment and $600 ? $800 or so for the cost of sperm plus shipping and storage each time we inseminate. Not to mention the legal fees for our second-parent adoption if we do get pregnant. If one of us has fertility issues, we?re even further up sh*t creek, as we most likely won?t be able to get insurance to cover our baby-making efforts. All this is to say that, unlike getting married, starting a family is a much, much different playing field from straight couples. It?s not just about semantics and traditions, it?s about navigating a minefield of potential setbacks, nail-biting worries, and hidden discrimination.

I won?t even go into the entirely different set of challenges for a gay male couple who want to have a biological child. (Basically, to have a biological child as a gay male couple, you have to be rich or go into a lot of debt. No joke.)

But what about adoption? That?s for everyone, right? In addition to the not-so-small cost of adoption, the uncertainty of getting a child or being subtly discriminated against, and the impossibility of international adoption, there?s that small roadblock of the 30 U.S. states that don?t support LGBT adoption* (Some of those states explicitly ban joint adoption by gay couples, but most stay silent, I guess hoping that if they close their eyes and stick their fingers in their ears, gay parenting will just go away). Foster care adoption is an even wilder landscape, with only 6 states explicitly supporting LGBT foster care adoption, and the majority staying stubbornly quiet on the issue (only two states explicitly prohibit LGBT foster adoption. Stay classy Utah and Nebraska!).

*Source: Movement Advancement Project.

It?s yet to be seen whether The New Normal will go into detail about how the gay couple depicted on the show can afford surrogacy, or if Modern Family will ever address any of thornier aspects of just how Cam and Mitch adopted Lily (they did touch on doing an open domestic adoption for their second child last season). All I know is that the victory of same sex marriage (which is still very much in process, and still very much tenuous ? ahem ? marriage amendments in Minnesota, Washington, and the one that?s already passed in North Carolina) will be quickly followed by the more serious (and necessary) need for LGBT family protections. Following the pattern of same sex marriage, LGBT family structures are entering popular culture, which means legislative battles won?t be far behind.

It seems as if each week a court case pops up with new and different verdicts about same sex families. Whether it?s a biological parent being able to take off with a couples? child (leaving the non-bio parent with no legal recourse), children unable to be insured by their non-bio parent, or living with the threat of your parenthood being contested by a donor, homophobic grandparents, or an unsympathetic judge, new issues are cropping up every day that?uh?kinda need to be dealt with (Government, I?m talking to you here).

So I?m finally ready to get married. And I?m 99% sure we want to start a family (I wouldn?t be editing this site if I didn?t). I can?t help but be hopeful we?ll have made as much progress on safeguards for LGBT families in a couple of years as we have for gay marriage these past two. Until then, I?ll keep posting gay parenting success stories on It?s Conceivable for you guys to read.

gay marriage gay parentingKendra is the editor of this site. She doesn?t talk about herself that much here because she doesn?t have kids (yet), but she?s going to try to do more of it anyway. She?s pictured here with her partner, Kelli, and her very cute niece, Addy.

Scientists identify new gene that influences survival in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? A team of scientists, including faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS), have discovered a gene that influences survival time in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). The study, published August 26 in Nature Medicine, describes how the loss of activity of a receptor called EphA4 substantially extends the lifespan of people with the disease. When coupled with a UMMS study published last month in Nature identifying a new ALS gene (profilin-1) that also works in conjunction with EphA4, these findings point to a new molecular pathway in neurons that is directly related to ALS susceptibility and severity.

"Taken together, these findings are particularly exciting because they suggest that suppression of EphA4 may be a new way to treat ALS," said Robert Brown, MD, DPhil, a co-author on the study and chair of neurology at UMass Medical School.

ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder affecting the motor neurons in the central nervous system. As motor neurons die, the brain's ability to send signals to the body's muscles is compromised. This leads to loss of voluntary muscle movement, paralysis and eventually respiratory failure. The cause of most cases of ALS is not known. Approximately 10 percent of cases are inherited. Though investigators at UMMS and elsewhere have identified several genes shown to cause inherited or familial ALS, almost 50 percent of these cases have an unknown genetic cause. There are no significant treatments for the disease.

Wim Robberecht, MD, PhD, lead investigator of the Nature Medicine study and a researcher at the University of Leuven in Belgium and the Vesalius Research Center, screened for genes in zebrafish that blunt the adverse effect of the ALS mutant gene SOD1. Through this process, his team identified EphA4 as an ALS modifier. Dr. Robberecht's team went on to show that when this gene is inactivated in mice with ALS, the mice live longer.

Dr. Robberecht then turned to UMass Medical School to confirm that turning off EphA4 in human ALS cells would slow the progression of the disease. Dr. Brown and his team identified two human ALS cases with mutations in the EphA4 gene which, like the zebrafish and the mice, had unusually long survival times. This suggests that blocking EphA4 in patients with ALS may be a potential therapeutic target in the future.

In an exciting, related development, a new ALS gene (profilin-1) identified last month by UMMS scientists works in conjunction with EphA4 in neurons to control outgrowth of motor nerve terminals. In effect, gene variants at both the top and the bottom of the same signaling pathway are shown to effect ALS progression. Together these discoveries highlight a new molecular pathway in neurons that is directly related to ALS susceptibility and severity and suggests that other components of the pathway may be implicated in ALS.

"It is exciting that these two studies identify the same pathway in ALS," said John Landers, PhD, associate professor of neurology and lead author of the PFN1 study. "Hopefully this discovery will accelerate efforts to finding a treatment for ALS."

Blue Microphones Tiki compact USB microphone a thumbdrivesized unit for mobile recording sessions

The Blue Microphones Tiki continues the trend, offering the same premium aesthetics we've come to expect from the company, along with top-notch audio quality. The Tiki is said to perform at its best with Skype-style video chats and voice recording, thanks in part to an intelligent mute and noise isolation features.

Togo: Women plan sex strike against president

LOME, Togo (AP) ? Women in the civil rights group "Let's Save Togo" said they will have a week long sex strike to demand the resignation of President Faure Gnassingb?.

The plan to withhold sex from their husbands for a week will start Monday, said Isabelle Ameganvi , leader of the group's women's wing.

Ameganvi, a lawyer, told the AP that her group is following the example of Liberia's women who used a sex strike in 2003 to campaign for peace.

The women's protest is part of a campaign by a coalition against Gnassingb?. The opposition group National Alliance for Change held a peaceful demonstration against the president on Saturday. Gnassingb? has been in power since 2005, following the death of his father Gnassingb? Eyadema who ruled the West African country for 38 years.
